Colorado Family Reunion

Recommended Posts

I was invited to our family reunion in Colorado.

Yeah, I was surprised too.

Anyway, it will be in Denver or some place real close to there.
Are there any DZ's that will be open and jumping around November 9th?

I envy you! I miss my family there AND the state itself. I haven't visited in 6 years...
But it's beautiful, even in November, when it's fairly cool...I'd take plenty of warm clothes, especially for jumping, but I wouldn't expect it to necessarily be FREEZING like six sweaters and long johns or anything.
However, you are in TX, and that means that cold is relative...you might be pretty cold if it's 40-45 there!:P
Have fun, wish it was me!

I just went over the Mile-hi web site.
Seems like fun.

Still don't know if I'm gunna go, though. The reunion is on Sunday and I still have this thing called work I have to present to do...[:/]

I have never been to the great state of Colorado but I have given it a tremendous amount of thought. Its the number one ski state and skiing used to be the most important thing in my life. If I had more freedom of mobility that is if I didn't have my big dogs to take care of, I probably would get out there to ski Vail, Beaver Creak, and Steamboat Springs. Maybe even drive out to Utah and hit Park City and Snowbird. I also like their open carry policy.
As for skydving in Colorado, I have no real desire to do that. Jumping with 11K feet density altitude seems like a lot of running. Sure you can upsize but I don't think the final results will be the same. As it is I find that I enjoy jumping more when the density altitude is at or below 4K rather than 5K in Dallas. (the lower the better) Its not just a question of faster or slower. Its everything, even the plane will climb faster when you are closer to standard temperature (15C) and at sea level.

Most of the time DA isn't this high in CO. Field elevation at Mile-Hi is 5050, which is about 49 degrees standard temp. Every 15 degrees over 49 adds 1000 feet DA, so on a "normal" summer day of 70, DA is only about 7,000 feet. if it gets up to 90, you're talking 9,000, but that's not typical. Of course, humidity notwithstanding, but humidity in Colorado isn't big anyway - it's technically a desert climate - very dry. Of course, I'm not saying landing at 7,000 DA is a great thing, but it makes going to boogies at sea level that much nicer B|

thanks. That all makes sense except one thing standard temperature is 59 F not 49. But in anycase the proves your point stronger.

OK - this is good, because I had to look it up again. Mile-Hi is 5050 feet MSL. At 5000 MSL, it looks like 41 degrees ISA according to Quade. 59 degrees is at sea level. Someone please let me know if I'm reading that wrong.

Therefore, about 71 degrees at Mile-Hi will add 2,000 DA, for a total of about 7,000 feet. And 101 F at Mile-hi, we're talking about 9,000 feet DA.

Until the King Air fiasco is resolved at Mile-Hi, I guess I'm going to have to consider Brush my new home. ;) Brush for sure is a friendly DZ, I'm just concerned about the winds (which weren't an issue yesterday).

As far as the density altitude is concerned. Sure CO isn't the most optimal place to skydive, but CO is an awesome state in which to live. And if you can learn to pilot your canopy here, you can pilot it anywhere. But unless you really know what you're doing and don't #@$% up, jumping a pocket rocket hanky of a canopy isn't the smartest thing to do here.

Speaking of Brush, just a side note. Field elevation is 4,280 feet, giving and ISA temp of about 44 degrees. So landings, won't be quite as bad. Although I honestly like the landing area at Mile-Hi better - it's flatter, further from the peas, and further from Farmer McNasty. We also need to mow a much bigger area at Brush - those sunflowers are murder on the shins.

Steve - nice hybrid jump last weekend by the way - your video is getting much better.

I messed up on the 2nd attempt by going low on the formation. :S Basically the hangers fell off and the base turned into a belly jump (speed wise) and by that time it was too late. I think I was able to match the base's fall rate, but was low. Damn I wish I weighed 20-30 lbs less. Skydiving would be a whole lot easier. But what can a lard ass like me do? :):o:PB|

Okay, I want to jump in here about the pros and cons of the DZs in the state of Colorado.

Yes, Mile-Hi does have a nicer landing area, if you don't mind riding the trailer out to get on the plane, and then waiting to ride it back. If there are Tandems on the load with you, then count on an extra 10 minutes waiting to get back to manifest and pack. Hint, put rubber bands and a pull up cord in your jumpsuit and pack in the landing area, if there isn't snow on the ground.

Yes, Brush does have some issues with "goat heads", just land in the peas. Heck, the area is big enough, I hit them every jump last weekend. I thought the landing area outside of the peas was mowed far enough out.

If you're going to jump at any DZ in the state, line up some friend from the forums ahead of time so you'll have someone to jump with.

Both DZ's have their farmer McNasty, but they are far enough away from the landing area, that it shouldn't be an issue.

Brush is farther to drive, but you can get on loads easier there. Mile Hi is closer to the Denver area, but is busy with Tandems. I'm sure by Nov. it will slow down and you won't have as much as an issue getting on a load.

Phil, I'd like to also comment on Steve's video. He did great doing the super float slot out of the Casa for the first time (beer). That Hybrid jump was fun. I didn't know how much work it would involve for the belly fliers once the freefliers went into their stand. All the freefliers remembered the number one rule, "Don't hurt Mary.";)

"Don't hurt Mary."

LOL ... on our 2nd attempt, just before jump run, Mary told us the two rules that we all needed to remember.

1) Don't hurt Mary
2) Don't forget Rule #1

It's funny as I don't remember being briefed on these rules before the first attempt?

Hehe - fall rate is an issue no matter how much you weigh! Saturday I did a coach jump with a girl that had to weigh 95 pounds. She overamped the exit out of the Casa, and we tumbled a bit. I flipped her to belly, but the problem was I was on my back :o Now, I seriously considered proceeding with the skydive upside down - I honestly think I could have done it, but I thought she would probably been confused about how to come in and dock on me if I'm on my back in a reverse arch :$ I decided to flip over, and in doing so, sank like a rock! She tried to get down to me by getting bigger, which didn't help me :)

That's cause you weren't in the tail of the Casa on the first jump.

Phil, yes, small gals most often will end up having to wear weights. I had on ten pounds all weekend. You'll learn to judge your students and figure out what jumpsuit to wear.

Yes I saw the girl you're talking about. :P She was all giggles when you two were talking on the ground. And your jump reminds me of jumps I've done with Cat and/or Jen (both small girls).

I think I found a decent way to fall on my back (basically de-arched with my legs hanging) and I like the fact that I can always have the other jumpers in view while on my back. But if not done right, I will fall faster on my back than on my belly and even though it's the furthest thing from my instincts, after talking with Jay E. he has me thinking that I need to get on my belly more often when I gow low (which is harder to keep track of the other jumpers). But I digress, what does all this have to do with the original intent of this thread. :)

Colorado is an awesome state!!! regardless if it's not one of the better places in which to skydive. ;)

"King Air fiasco"???
You mean the King Air being in the shop so we had to jump an Otter for two weeks? Yeah, that really sucked.;)

But the King Air is back now, and the Otter is gone, so you can come home again. :)
