*sigh*...so, as a few may recall from an obscure post, I had to spend several hundred dollars to repair damage done to my car when thieves stole the turn signal units off my Acura. Final bill, about $400.00. Everything is fixed, fitted and "good".

This morning, I start my day normally, and everything is working, automotively speaking. I finish my first appointment and get in the car. I open the windows, and as I back out, I hear a gentle flutter sound as I engage the clutch to back out of the parking spot. The car pulls fine, no excessive revving, and no slippage. Fine, but I know something's wrong. I immediately call my dealer and let them know I need them to look at it. They say, "No problem, we'll have a loaner car waiting for you." Getting on the highway, dealing with slow traffic, is uneventful, traffic clears and cruising is okay. I get off the highway and engaging gears and matching revs as I slow down is all of the sudden very difficult. Gear engagements hold, but it's not feeling good.

Get to the dealer. They look at it. Clutch is all but gone...and the clutch sump requires replacement. They asked how I made it the 23 miles and 60 minutes it took. They were amazed. So, new clutch estimate and sump... $1350.00 :S:S[:/]B|B|B|:S. They've never heard of a clutch failing so quickly. I don't over-rev in first gear or ride the clutch. :S

I'm pale. The work is underway...:S Maybe there's a defect and the warranty will cover it... *wishful thinking*
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh

Shop around my friend. $1300.00 for a clutch is well.. can you say RAPE! ??

Most auto shops (non-dealer) will do it for under half that much. Call around and pay $50 to get it towed to the nearest and reliable shop. That's a big sum of jump tickets going down the drain... :(

Jesus! Is your ass sore?!
If the car wasn't worth that much, you probably could have dropped a used transmission in it for $600-800. It's a gamble, because it can (probably will) die on you again sooner than having yours rebuilt - but you could do it again and still be ahead in total $$ spent.
Still, over $2,000 to rebuild a transmission seems a little high.
it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality

Alas, from past experiences I will no longer give independent shops my business under any circumstances. I've had such good experience dealing with Honda NA and Acura that if there's a repair failure, I know I won't have an issue. An indy-shop...forget it. So, the parts have a margin, I understand that. The labor, $60/hr...it's high, but I won't call it rape.

It is a lot of jump tickets. I don't think I'll be prevented from going to Chicks Rock 2003 at Elsinore though... ;)

Ever thought of getting your hands dirty and getting done yourself??? It's true that 1350.00 for a clutch sounds really stiff to me! A new clutch kit cost around 150.00 at any part's store... so do the math and it seems like it will take them mucho hours to change your clutch!!! A clutch can be changed in a few hours (3 to 4 hours) if you have the right tools and a lift. Which I am sure they do have :P

Of course they can warranty their work at this price...

I mean no matter what you do, whenever someone brings their car to the mechanic, they will get the shaft!! I personally got shafted so many times that I decided to fix them myself! It really is nothing complicated and it will save you beaucoup bucks in the long run! Just get the repair manual for the car you have and follow the directions...

Once you learn a little bit about how your car works, you will really start to understand that mechanics and dealer are crooks...Fixing a car is not rocket science and sometimes the guy that has to fix the car at the dealer doesn't know much about cars than my grandma...[:/]

Anyways, I feel your pain man...car problems suck!
Hope thing will work out for you.

I know how a car works, and can take care of light repairs, but I'm not equiped to do repairs like this.

As I do not own my own home, or tools or lift kit, etc., I'm not in a position to do the work myself. And I would bet easy money that the dealer would not let me use their equipment to do the work. ;)Though I'd be willing. Me and my friends used to work on our motorcycles ourselves, that was easier to manage. I'd rather have the work warranted. Besides, I'm one of those that actually drives the car in a manner consistent with how it was designed. I use all five gears, all the time...it has VTEC for a reason, so I use it...a lot...:P...6-8000 RPM is music...

In other news, Honda fans, it appears that the Acura RSX Type R will not be coming to our shores. However, a Civic Type R may be in the works (take a RSX Typs S engine et voila!) soon. The upcoming TL is a monster and I may see my future in one of those...maybe... :PB|...waiting to see what happens to the car tax. Then again, CL-Type S 6 speeds are well below sticker now... hmmm...

Dude I totally feel your pain, I've gone thru it more than once.

Bought my 95 Eclipse for 10k used. 54,000 miles on it.

61,000 miles it starts popping out of 3rd on the highway... Drove it to the dealer using 1,2,4 and 5th started to go. The tranny dropped before I got there... $1800

3,000miles later timing belt breaks doing 80 on the highway. Bends 15 of 16 valves. Rebuilt engine $1300

6 months later, picking up my date to take her to prom at the time. Car dies a block from her house, no compression on the engine, won't turn over, nothing... Walk to her house in my tux worry about it the next day.

Spark plug broke off in cylinder 3, destroyed the piston and block beyond repair. New engine $2500

So yeah, don't ever by an Eclipse anyone k. If i didn't still have a loan on the car, i would have scrapped it. So now I've put 20k into a car that is maybe worth 6 if i'm lucky...

Do the work yoruself, it's cheaper if you can, but in yoru case, if you have the cash and like the car, go with the dealer
