Have a Protrack and N3. Now what to use: Jumptrack or Paralog?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I'm not sure what to do and have high hopes that posting my dilemma here will get me further.

Here it is: I've got a Protrack that I currently use as a digital logbook together with the Jumptrack software. I also use it in my helmet for the freefall alarms.

Now I've complicated things by getting myself a shiny new N3 to use as a digital altimeter and for its canopyalarms. So far so good: two toys that really help me out both in freefall and under canopy. The dilemma comes from the logbook functionality that both devices possess.

Question (1):
What device do you think, the N3 or the Protrack, has better logbook qualities?

Question (2):
What software do you think, Jumptrack or Paralog, is generally deemed superior and why?

What I like about Jumptrack is that I already use it so I'm familiar with it. Admittedly not a very strong point.

What I think I'll like about Paralog is that you can use it together with an Iphone app (so that it'll be some use to me where I need it: in the field of when bored out of my mind to review my jumps).

Not having jumped my brand new N3 yet I'd like to set everything up (or migrate from Jumptrack to Paralog if that's the way to go) before I start jumping the N3 together with the Protrack.

Hope some people here on Dropzone.com use the same setup as me and have already decided what and why they use for what end. Really looking forward to your input.

Thanks,

Rob

Paralog is very flexible, has some awesome features like GPS import (fairly useful for CRW or wingsuiting)

Jumptrack is MUCH faster, has a few easier options and is a better logger, IMO.

I use both, but have resorted to Jumptrack for logging and Paralog for GPS reading.
You can use multiple devices on Paralog, and import the Jumptrack log to Paralog at any time.
Fair warning; if you use multiple devices on Paralog, you have to buy a license for each additional device, and unless you're good at reading fine print in a license, you won't know that until you've frustrated yourself for a while.

Thanks for your reply, appreciate the input.

I was wondering; doesn't the N3 store more jump data than the Protrack and wouldn't that -by default- make it a better device to do the logbook part? If that's true wouldn't that automatically make Paralog the better tool for analysis ?

Wrote Klaus / Paralog an email just now asking about how things would work when you use both devices in Paralog btw. Will post a summary here.

Paralog does support multiple loggers. Paralog will not reconcile different loggers into one jump, though. You can have only one loggers data per jump.

About Jumptrack being faster; is it a really big difference? And mightn't it be slower because you've got big jumpnumber in it? I get about 20 jumps in a really good year so that wouldn't be an issue for me anytime this decade ;-)

Jumptrack is faster because it's more simple and intuitive, IMO. It might be my familiarity with Jumptrack; it's never easy to 'jump' from one software to the other.

Paralog can't import data from multiple sources (Neither can Jumptrack). which is why I've resorted to JT for logging and Paralog for uploading GPStracks (Jumptrack doesn't do GPS at all).
Paralog is definitely a "smarter" program. Maybe too smart.
As far as devices...you have to purchase a license for each device, so if you're using a Flysight with an Altitrack, you pay for the Flysight license. You cannot use data from both devices on the same jump.

I am a fan of Paralog, it makes more sense to me than JumpTrack. However, seeing how you are used to Jumptrack already, Paralog might not appear that way to you. I would recommend that you download Paralog and give it a try. Klaus, the guy who writes the Paralog program, is an active skydiver and a member of the forums here. So if you have any questions or issues, he would be the one to ask and he is usually very prompt in responding and helping people out beyond just using the Paralog software.
