jfields 0 #26 October 1, 2003 Wendy, Bigotry is part of it, and close, but not quite it. I don't have just the right word. I agree that the focus on minute details of wording is a distraction. It is frustrating that rather than actually deal with the content, the bigotry is denied, defended and obfuscated through verbal games. I suppose it is a failing of mine that I try to respond and clarify, in order to get a common ground on which to base a rebuttal. Nobody seems willing to accept responsibility for what they are saying, however bigoted it may be. It is easier to deny their actions and faults, along with mocking those that disagree, than to actually take part in meaningful conversation.
jfields 0 #27 October 1, 2003 QuoteSo are you saying that because you can "Identify" theses people in a group that they are their own race. Nope. Didn't call them races at all. I called them groups. Because they aren't races, does that mean it is okay to harass them based on something else?
turtlespeed 226 #28 October 1, 2003 It would depend on how general you chose to be at this time. Isn't this what we are battling? Is it not true that the muslim extremists taht this thread was loosley based on, consider all Americans "Infadels?" That wouldn't fit into your definition?I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
freeflybella 0 #29 October 1, 2003 The "extremists" part is the part to worry/wonder about. Unfortunately, you can't see that from the outside. So to focus on someone's age, skin color or heritage as a gauge of whether they are 'extremist' is prejudicial and NOT factual. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi
turtlespeed 226 #30 October 1, 2003 Yes, I agree. But what I don't agree with is that if we don't "group" people and make SOME determinations and SOME speculations, we open ourselves up to one of two options. Ignore everyone and put you, my kids, me, and everyone else here in this country, in danger, from some ass hole that has a vendetta against a policy, or doesn't like the music that we listen to, or perhaps just doesn't like the size of the buildings we build, from blowing us up or creating violence and hovok. Or we can become even more of a police state than we are now.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun

Well semantically speaking, turtlespeed is then right when he says it's not racism, no? Bigotry perhaps yes, but not racism. racism n 1: the prejudice that members of one race are intrinsically superior to members of other races 2: discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of another race [syn: racialism, racial discrimination] If the bigotry is based on other factors than race, it wouldn't be racism.. A blanket statement such as "I intently dislike the views found in the Muslim/Christian world that women are inferior or subservient to men" wouldn't be a racist one. It'd be a culturally based (more specifically religious) and of course a gross oversimplification. But racist? No. Santa Von GrossenArsch I only come in one flavour ohwaitthatcanbemisunderst

mnischalke 0 #33 October 1, 2003 You're right. Mindsets have to change. The folks who are spending their lives working up ways to kill us (each and every one of us by any and all means necessary, and don't kid yourself to think anything different) unfortunately, don't wear uniforms. They rely on the fact that they blend into a certain culture (while race may play some in that, it is not a factor overall). If you don't understand the basic premise of terror and terrorism, you will never be able to understand how to effectively exterminate terrorists or at least thin their numbers. The crazy thing is, the word you all should be looking at is "HATE." Its not race, it's lifestyle, culture, religion and everything that makes each of us part of a certain society. I really don't think you understand what we're up against until you realize the extreme hate these individuals have for us. They hate us so much, they sacrifice their own lives to rid the world of a few of us. They hide within their own people knowing their mere presence could mean that the entire group perishes, on the off-chance that we rely on and revert back to our sensibilities inherent to a "civilized culture." We can categorize shit all day long into what act is a terrorist act or simply a murder. We can mislable things with the million dollar words of tort law, or we can try to understand the motiviations and methods of certain groups of individuals, who use larger groups of individuals as a shield. The question remains (and please be honest): When standing in line at the airport with your family, would you rather the TSA agents pull over, frisk, metal scan and body cavity search the 80-year-old grandmother traveling with her grand kids or one of the four 18-40-year-old middle-eastern men standing in line in front of you? Personally, I'd rather they didn't have to search anybody, but unfortunately, that's not the world we live in now. mike Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills--You know, like nunchuk skills, bow-hunting skills, computer-hacking skills. mnischalke 0 #34 October 1, 2003 I think of you in the same way I think of every other American or, for that matter, human being and coinhabitant of dear old Mother Earth. The fact that you serve your country is a bonus. Thanks for your service! (if you've come to think I have such a closed mind to hold anything against any whole group of people for the actions of a few of those people, yer mad.) mike Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills--You know, like nunchuk skills, bow-hunting skills, computer-hacking skills.
