Anyone Know Anything about Audio-DVD?

Recommended Posts

Is this the next music medium which will require me to get a "new" disc player someday?

I take it the platforms CD/DVD-Aud/DTS 5.1 aren't backward compatible (i.e. my perfectly functional Onkyo CD player won't play DVD Audio, but my DVD player will)?

I figured as much. Anyway, does anyone have an opinion or perception about audio-DVD or DTS 5.1 discs gaining momentum? Or, are they the next Betamax?

DVD-A has been around for a few years - it has occupied a small spot at Best Buy, etc for a while now.

I've yet to hear DVD-A, but it is supposed to give you the warmth of sound that is missing from CD audio.

Do a google search on it - there is plenty to read on it. Is it here to stay? Not sure. There was/is a Super CD audio format it was competing with, but that seems to have gone away. DVD-A has been fighting for a market share for sometime and just doesn't seem to go away. The thought process is that CDs are bound to become older technology soon...so everyone is positioning themself to be the next big thing.

Then while you are there, read up on blue ray dvd technology.

The sound is freakin' awesome!

I have a friend in Palm Springs who has designed his entire livingroom around his sound system with DVD-audio. Speakers are set at strategic places around (above and below) the room.

It's like you're sitting in the middle of the orchestra pit, with every instrument with it's own broadcast route! I mean, the horns on one side, the clarinets on the other, the drums behind, and the oboes to the front. (yeah, I played in our University orchestra for 4 years, and high school for the 4 before that....so kill me :P).

I'm sure that any concert would sound and feel just as incredible.
