Chiropractors: Good or Bad?

Recommended Posts

I know people have discussed back pain solutions before, but I don't think they've talked specifically about chiropractors.

I've heard a lot of people say - once you go see one, you can't stop.

I've heard people say - chiropractors have improved their lives ten fold.

I've also heard people say - chiropractors screwed their back up.

I've had constant severe back pain now for weeks, and off and on over the years. It's never been this bad. I've had sports massage, I've seen a personal trainer, I've got a good bed, and I still can't seam to beat it. I'm about to break down and see a chiropractor. Is this a good idea? [:/]

Depends on the issue. Chiropractors are good at some things, but should not be mistaken for regular doctors. In their specialty, they can have insights and experience regular doctors don't. I won't say they are all quacks, but they definitely belong in an alternative niche.

I've seen a chiropractor for a few months now for pinched nerves in my hips and lower back. Worked wonders!!! He did a form of therapy known as active release therapy (ART). Practicioners are hard to find, but the therapy is wonderful.

Good luck!

If people have back problems they should go see a real doctor, one who actually went to medical school.

True, but in some cases, a real doctor will even recommend a chiropractor, because the problem lies in the small area where chiropractors may have some real skill. But like you, I would not recommend one for the actual diagnosis of a problem. If you don't know what is going on, see a real MD.

see a regular doctor first to make sure your pain isn't from other causes...

both heart disease and cancer (especially Hodgkins disease) can cause back pain, so can kidney trouble.

if the problem has to do with the muscles or skeleton, your doctor can refer you to a reputable chiropractor.

Wow! :o That's kinda frightening. I think mine was caused by an old incident of line dump on a Sabre 2, but I could be wrong. :S

It sounds like it would be well worth it to see a regular doctor first, even though I'm getting pretty desperate for a quick fix.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! :)

I have a friend who is a chiropractor, and I trust him. He went to chiropractic school, and is a doctor of chiropracty or whatever DC stands for. There are all kinds of doctors, not just medical doctors. Hell, dentists are doctors.

I say go to the chriopractor and see what kind of vibe you get. If the guy seems on the up and up and helps you, then all good. If the guy is an idiot and does not help, then don't go back. And make sure that you do not have a medical condition that is making your back hurt (as mentioned earlier in the thread).

Like others have said, chiropractors do their thing, and their thing is different from what doctors do. If you need one, one will help. If you do not need one, a reputable one will tell you that you don't.

I had a car accident 3-1/2 years ago that threw me from the car, and I landed on my back. My back hurt all day every day for 6 months, and I couldn't make it stop. Sometimes it was so bad that I would cry myself to sleep or not sleep at all.
I went to a chiropractor, and at first, it seemed like the results only lasted till about 5 minutes after I left the office, then the pain would be back. After seeing her weekly for 4 months, though, there was no pain at all.
I know some people who didn't give it that much of a chance and just claimed it was worthless.
The point is that, like anything else, IF it's going to work for you, it takes more than a couple of "doses" for it to really take effect.

Like everything else in life, everyone has their own opinion.

After I broke my femur a few years ago, I ended up being so out of align that I walked with a limp 3 years later. The problem was that my hip on the side that the break was on was an inch and half higher than the hip on the other side (probably because of the rod and the fact that I spent so much time favoring that leg) after 3 months of seeing a chiropractor 3 times a weeks it's almost back in perfect alignment and I don't limp anymore. Also, my daughter had pretty severe scholisis and the chiropractor has almost completely straightened her spine out.

I'm sure there are bad chiropractors, just like there are bad medical doctors. My biggest beef with the medical profession these days is, due to the fact that there are not enough doctors for the demand you spend 45 minutes in a waiting room, 20 minutes in the exam room waiting and when the doctor actually shows up, he spends a total of 3 minutes with you, charges you a fortune and then just prescribes some drugs that you probably didn't even need anyway. Most don't really take the time to really find the real cause of your problem.

Just my 2 cents.

I had injured my back, went to the Dr. who prescribed muscle relaxers and pain pills. The muscle relaxers didn't do anything. A few years later I reinjured my back, same place. The choice this time was to a chiropractor. Amazing difference! With a few adjustments, I was feeling better. The bonus was, I had always suffered from headaches and they started to be less frequent! Now, as long as I go regularly, like every few months, the headaches are managable. When I was in an auto accident, I went to my chiropractor. I always thought whiplash was a joke, until it happens to you! What a difference in my recovery.

VERY good IF and its a big if, you go to a good one. Also, it will take a few visits to get everything worked out, since it takes a few adjustments to get your muscles to relax and leave your back where it is supposed to be.

If you were in Texas, I'd send you to Doc Stewart. He's one of the best Chiropractors I've ever seen AND he's a jumper.B|

I had a terminal reserve opening in 1977. In those days we were using chest mounted reserves. I had trouble walking for months afterwards but never went to a doctor. I suffered intermittent back pain and problemssince that day.
In 1996 I got a prolaps in my back while packing. Once again I did not go to the doctor. The pain in my back became so constant that I had to stop jumping.

Slowly but surely my mobility decreased and the back pain increased until in march this year I had to stop working altogether.
In truth I had been to the doctor a few times but all I got was some asprin and told to come back in 6 months if it still hurts.

The moral of this story is. If you got a problem, get it seen to.

On to the question in hand.

I am now seeing 2 chiropractors,
2 physiothearapists, 1 doctor & 1 Phycologist.
(I live in Norway which is a welfare state so the goverment pays for everything, even my jobs wages)

I am very happy with the chiropractors. they work closely together with my doctor.
Very often the muscles om my back are so tight, the chiropractor cant get the bones to move.
The doctor usually injects anasthetic into the muscles so the chiropractor can do her work.
After so many years of not using my back, there is very little movement.

I train with the Physiothearapists about four times a week. There job is to build up the muscles
that have not been used for so long. One of them has the job of giving my back a massage twice a
week as I am unable to relax the muscles myself. :)

The Phycologist is there because all this is really depressing and painfull. :D there is also a good possibility that I will suffer back pain for the rest of my life.

Sorry for the long post, but I see lots of people complaining of back pain. My advice is.

Yes go see a chiropractor, they can probably help a lot. But give your back some time to recover. It is a really important bit. ;) If a chiropractor doesnt help you, dont leave it there. seek help elseware.

p.s. Sorry for the bad spelling

i'm not sure which Dr. Stewart you're referring to, but it's ironic at least that the name of the chiropractor i use is last name is Stewart, Jimmy, has a brother named Vince, they're both pretty good. Jimmy worked on me 3-4 times a week (over the course of 2 years) just to keep me pain free long enough to stay in the gym, but finally he couldn't help me any longer. we did some new x-rays after it wasn't getting better, and he advised that i visit an accupuncturists, i did. he said it would take at least 7 visits for him to fix it, it took 2. Dr. Kim Kai Lai in the bluebonnet shopping center in Brenham, Texas at hwy 290 & 36 on the south and east side of the intersection. bad thing is, insurance will not cover accupuncture. ????

Nope, I'm talking about Don "Doc" Stewart. He's up in Stephenville and was one of my original jumpmasters at Eagle Flight Skydiving.

He used to jump in Houston, though, back in the early '70s. He had a rigging loft setup and did all sorts of crazy stuff.B|

Chiropractors are great for certain problems, however it is necessary for you to maintain good physical fitness, especially for your trunk area (abdominal, oblique, and back muscles) to keep you out of pain. In short, your muscles need to be strong and flexible. That said, chiropractors can be a real help; I have been seeing mine for over 7 years. Before that, I used to go into spasms in my low back about 3 - 4 times a year. Now I don't get them at all. However, due to a broken bone in my back, it's not something that will ever go away, therefore I keep seeing him.
Also, have you considered a physical therapist? They can work wonders in strengthening and correcting muscle problems, as well as giving you the correct exercises to fix your particular problems.

Way back in the day-
I worked for a father and son,
One in a huge practice in Cincinati, Ohio
and a 10 DC practice in Houston.

The father of the first one was on the board at the TCC, Founded in 1908, Texas Chiropractic College is the third oldest chiropractic college in the nation and recognized as one of the very best.

He beleived if you vision the parking lot filled then it would be. .... So the staff had to do that. I visioned a bunch of yellow big birds - it didnt happen. We also had to eat a macrobiotic diet.

The dude in Ohio, didnt fake it or push it. He knew it worked for some and others not.

The group of 10, were the biggest bunch of losers I have ever met. They may or may not have padded the billing for attorneys who did whiplash cases. I bailed.

After 22 years in the real medical field I have come to know that if you BELIEVE that something will help or that it IS helping then it will.

Manipulating a spine or cervical spine is tricky. Especially if you have a blown disc. No twisting is going to make that go away.

Later I worked for a super well respected Orthopedic group in Houston. I saw wonderous things there. The only thing that worked for some situations were titanium rods and fusing the vertebra together. I saw people who shouldnt be able to move - walk.

Our back specialist would stand and operate for more than 9-10 hrs. Dude is totally awesome.

Anyway- if you believe it - it may work.

ps - the current president of the TCC is from my home town and I know him to be a real good man. I have known him even before I was born. He gave my mother (preg) some twists when he would come to the house.

I went to a chiropractor 2-3 times after I hurt my back pulling a boat onto a dock and felt a lot better immediately. That said, there are chiropractors who got all of their degrees from the same school in about 5 years, including college. There are some that will charge more than $500 for the first visit and about $250 thereafter. $40 for an ice pack; others it's free. There are a wide variety of them out there. Some make more than $1M/year; others make about $100k. Some think it can cure asthma and cancer. (don't laugh) I'd probably see a medical doctor first (orthopedist)and see what he says. Try physical therapy to strengthen the area. Assuming the doctor says there's no major problem and a chiro's okay, try it. If you have any kind of numbness, tingling, shooting or radiating pain, tell a medical doctor ASAP.

Most of the time the pain is like a knife being jammed in between my shoulder blades. Then, within a few days, my entire back starts to ache, I think from compensating for the other pain.

When I had my line dump and went to the ER, they did an MRI and such and said that I had severe whip lash and a compression in my spine. I had no insurance at the time, so I did nothing. I think that might have been a big mistake.

I have gone every two weeks for the last several years. If I don't go, my neck will get out of whack and require about of week of intense treatment to correct. I have been to an orthapedic (is that how you spell orthapedic?) surgeon who told me to avoid him like the plague. He said that if I came to see him again he would just cut on me. Just for the record, I have two herniated discs in my neck and one in my lower back, at least that is what the mri said. They are fine as long as you do nothing to aggravate them. Sometimes though all it takes is stretching or moving wrong and it will pinch the nerve and owwwwwwwwwww.

Hi weegegirl!!

10 years ago my car was run over by a semi-truck. Needless to say, my back was totally screwed up. In the first four years after the accident, I could barely walk from all of the pain that I had. I had over 1800 doctor/physical therepy/chiropractor appointments in this four year period of time.

I started seeing the chiropractor and I would get some temporary relief after each visit. By relief, i mean I could somewhat walk for a while. I felt that this was worth going to the chiropractor for. I'm glad I did. This was recommended by sports medicine doctors at both uni of mich hos., and st joe.

I had always felt i needed physical therepy that was very exercise intense, and I finally found a physical therepist in Plymouth that was into exercise for therepy. After the first visit, which he did some kind of deep massage (actually he put his knuckles into my back about 6 inches, it hurt like hell) and I felt immediate relief. After 4 more months, I not only could walk normal without pain again, but i could exercise also without pain. Heck, i even took up skydiving!!! I no longer have any pain, and that is without medication also. They also taught me excercises that allowed me to take the pain away by myself, without going to a chiropractor. So anytime I get a sore neck or back, i can do these exercises to stop the pain before it gets bad again.
So, I would say yes to the chiropractor , and see how that goes, or go to a great physical therepist (that uses lots of exercise). Keep trying, sooner or later you will hit on the correct therepy, and the pain WILL go away!! B|
