Gawain 0 #1 October 5, 2003 Syria: "Gravest Escalation of Mideast Tensions" Link: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,99140,00.html Here are a couple cuts from the report: Sunday, October 05, 2003 JERUSALEM — Israeli warplanes attacked an Islamic Jihad (search) training base deep in Syria in retaliation for Saturday's homicide bombing at a Haifa restaurant that killed 19 people. Israeli media said it was the first Israeli attack on Syrian soil in more than two decades. ...... At the request of Syria, a closed-door session of the U.N. Security Council will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. EDT, Reuters reported. In a letter to the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the Security Council, Syria's foreign minister urged it to immediately hold a session to discuss Israel's action and to deter future strikes against Syria. The foreign minister says Syria has practiced "the highest degree of self-restraint" but that Israel seeks to embroil the entire Middle East in its problems. The foreign minister urged the Security Council to "condemn, deter and prevent" a repeat of this "dangerous development." The 22-member Arab League is convening an emergency session later today on the Israeli attack. The Arab League secretary general calls the attack "state terrorism" and says it has created a "dangerous issue" that requires consultation between all Arab countries. A Jihad spokesman denied the organization has any bases in Syria. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., said Sunday that Israel’s attack on the Syrian-based camp was “not unlike what we did after Sept. 11, attacking Al Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan.” Secretary of State Colin Powell spoke to Israel's foreign minister after homicide bombing amid worries at the time that Israel's response would target Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. At this point, I don't think there's anyone that can put the "toothpaste back in the tube". While Syria has "closed" offices of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, it still harbors the leadership of these organizations, despite intense pressure not to do so. For those that understand "political-speak" using the word "grave" is usually a promise that some type of violent action/reaction is assured (except in the case of DPRK, who use the word all the time). So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light!
