RevJim 0 #3 October 5, 2003 QuoteSkydivers are most definately my family. Yes, to me all other skydivers are my family. Sadly though, I have found that I am not in some of those other skydivers families. No matter, they are brothers/sisters to me, even if I am nothing more than a hamster to them. It's your life, live it! Overdozed on Prozac this morning Ivan? lol Seriously people, skydivers are just like everybody else.... there's good ones, and ones I would never want to be associated with. whocares 0 #8 October 5, 2003 Just because someone jumps out of an airplane i do not consider them family. it is time to quit thinking just because we all skydive we are some big family. My family is my wife and kids not some skydivers. Now do i consider a lot of skydivers friends yes, but not family.
skreamer 1 #9 October 5, 2003 Remi, I agree (yep, treasure this moment ). When you get fucked over by a skydiving 'brother' it kind of puts things in perspective - you lose the rose-tinted glasses. Nobody will ever replace my real family, if everything goes to shit I know I can rely on them. Skydivers as a whole are a group of people that I share a very strong common interest with, not a mortgage. Will

bobsled92 0 #12 October 5, 2003 I just know that I have been treated well at DZ's where people have just met me and pow, I having dinner with them(and they're cooking). I tend to give prefered treatment to fellow jumpers. Actual Family is 1st and there are A-holes in the Real Fam. I just feel a sense of connection with jumpers. No one is beyond reproach, just the benifit of doubt is greater, Like the Police/brotherhood (with is also in our family for 450 years-Kilts&Swords)_______________________________ If I could be a Super Hero, I chose to be: "GRANT-A-CLAUS". and work 365 days a Year. http://www.hangout.no/speednews/
Vallerina 2 #13 October 5, 2003 Oh heck no! Take any other sport/hobby/interest that you can form a quick bond with somebody over, and you'll get the same deep connection. It doesn't mean they're family; it just means that you have one thing in common. My theory is that the "family" feeling is felt when other parts of their life are not fulfilled. People use skydiving to replace what's missing. There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning

smiles 0 #16 October 5, 2003 Skydivers are connected strongly, but I do not feel they = family, as my own family ties are strong. Being a proud mother - it has been easy to "mother" all my skydiving buddies, open arms to "look out" for and welcome all. Also feel I have been "mothered" by so very many over the years, regardless of male or female. 16 years in the sport I have found each and every one of us are different in ways of contributing but the ones that truly shine are giving everything they can back to the sport. eeneR 3 #17 October 5, 2003 QuoteMy theory is that the "family" feeling is felt when other parts of their life are not fulfilled. People use skydiving to replace what's missing. I think it can be used lightly...as there are many families...however I do agree that some people are looking to fill a void. Just the same there are people who turn to the internet or other avenues in the same way. They cannot maintain true relationships in real life, and on the internet there is less emotion, or you can easily mask it and become what you want people to think you are. Same thing with the DZ...people can put on an "Act". Its fun, its part of the DZ culture....if you so choose to participate, if you dont that is no problem either. It is great to have the "Surrogate" or "Extended" families, as long as you realize that it is just an extention of reality. There is nothing like true flesh and blood family and true friendships...the ones that last for decades! Those friends may as well just be family She is not a "Dumb Blonde" - She is a "Light-Haired Detour Off The Information Superhighway." eeneR TF#72, FB#4130, Incauto

bobsled92 0 #19 October 5, 2003 I'm actually comparing to the "Brotherhood" found in Troopers and Police of days gone by. Still, I wondered if others gave prefferential treatment to people that they knew, OR discovered were jumpers also._______________________________ If I could be a Super Hero, I chose to be: "GRANT-A-CLAUS". and work 365 days a Year. http://www.hangout.no/speednews/
eeneR 3 #20 October 5, 2003 Quote"Brotherhood" Well that is a bit different Like I had mentioned family can be assumed on different levels. I do think there is a brotherhood in skydiving...but it can be said the same for many other hobbies too...Like today, I saw a lady walking a Shiba Inu (dog) thru the parking lot at SDC. I ran up, asked her if that was a Shiba (which i was sure of) and we sat there chatting about the dogs and rescue. I went and got my Shiba from the trailer....She is not a "Dumb Blonde" - She is a "Light-Haired Detour Off The Information Superhighway." eeneR TF#72, FB#4130, Incauto

Blahr 0 #24 October 6, 2003 Skydivers = family as soon as a member of my family begins skydiving. A lot of skydivers I've met are extremely cool. Others were assholes. I'd be proud to call some of them friend. Taken as a group, they are pretty cool, exciting, adventurous people. In point of fact though, the most screwed up individual I have ever had the displeasure to meet was a skydiver at the DZ. No blanket statements from me :-)
WrongWay 0 #25 October 6, 2003 Quote My theory is that the "family" feeling is felt when other parts of their life are not fulfilled. People use skydiving to replace what's missing. I somwhat agree and disagree with ya Val. IMHO, skydiving family IS family, and maybe that is because of something missing, because I grew up with no sense of family. Still, while skydiving gives me that something I never had, it's not the REASON I skydive. I skydive because it's fun, it's a constant challenge to better myself, and because I feel it's what I was meant to do. Yes, you guys are all my family, my brothers and sisters, role models and parent figures, but you're not why I skydive.
