pilotdave 0 #17 October 7, 2003 Over-wing podded engines have a lot of advantages over under-wing engines. But they're tougher to get to for maintenance. But they allow for a shorter landing gear, they prevent debris injestion, and can be used to blow lots of extra air over the flaps for better short field performance. Generally wing mounted engines also reduce the weight of the aircraft over fuselage mounted engines too, because in flight, the structure that attaches the wing to the fuselage doesn't need to hold up the weight of the engines, so a lighter structure can be used.
