PLEASE, write USPA (I know Lodi is not a USPA DZ) and Parachutist.

We need some kind of a system in this sport that will prevent DZ's from selling canopies to people who are not at the skill level needed to fly them. I can name a few DZO's that are ready to sell you anything just to make a buck. This HAS to stop!!!!

Was this a new or used parachute?

I can see where it may -just- be possible to have gear manufacturers blacklist an individual and prevent them from selling new parachutes directly, but I can't imagine under what mechanism anyone could prevent anyone else from selling a used parachute.

However, DZ's can check what you are jumping against how many jumps you have and decide on individual basis whether or not to let you jump that gear.

It's a start, but also a slippery slope that many have voiced an opinion on that we should not go down. I'm not saying whether it's right or wrong, but check out the threads about Canopy Regulation. Further, this would probably only be "enforcable" at USPA Group Member drop zones.

I fail to see how this would have done anything in this particular case.

Chill bro. We'll get the word out... I'm guilty of lashing out and getting a bit hot headed too. It's not helping anything at the moment...

Just chill.

Maybe individuals (not gear dealers) who make assinine decisions like selling a Stiletto to someone with 30 jumps should get their ratings and awards yanked...

And again, how would that do anything in this instance? Isn't the drop zone in question a non-Group Member drop zone?

We need to find a creative idea between a lawsuit and nothing. Something that will have an effect on the person involved. Money usually works and if you could convice everyone to not use that person's services or that he would no longer be welcome then that's great, but I don't think that would work in this instance.

I'm not so much talking about the specific person in question here, but rather any DZO, Group Member or not. The reason is that they don't really -have- to have "regular" customers in order to stay in business. Just take a look at Las Vegas for instance.

in addition to FJC and graduating to Self Jump Master, then the "A" license and purchasing your own gear, we ought to have a "common sense seminar" that's all this comes back to is common sense. it's sounds simple, but it obviously isn't. when i saw my first swoop it was at SDSL in Rosharon, the guy flying the canopy was one of my AFP jumpmasters, i questioned him about the physics involved in this "high performance landing teqnique" his reply was "Richard, when you can explain in detail every thing i just did, and when, and why i did it, i tell you what i know" the matter never came up again. i still admire this particular indivudual even though i haven't seen him since 2001. words of wisdom, listen, learn or die by rebellion. sad, harsh, but true.

It certainly does:

So after years and years of copying the manuscript, but only from a very early copy of the text, the monk went down into the archives to look at the original work which upon which they had based their philosophy and lived their lives.

He came back tearfully..."the word is CELEBRATE!"

Oh, and my 2 cents: caveat emptor

I know it's a hot topic, but I haven't paid a lot of attention to the discussion. My two cents are 100% in favor of personal responsibility.

I don't dispute a DZ's inherent duty to provide skilled advice to a customer/jumper/friend. I don't dispute a DZ's right to refuse service/sales or provide service/sales. I don't know of any other industry that would regulate otherwise. Do hang-glider dealers do that? Certainly they encounter the same issues.

This would be like saying that 16 year olds can no longer buy Honda Civics, because they can buy a used car (with daddy's money) for a song, spend some weekend job money for AEM, Neuspeed and CompTech gear, and they have a 250bhp beast ready for mayhem and re-enactment of Fast and Furious. The kid clearly does not have the driving experience to handle that kind of power, yet it's perpetual and probably a lot more prevalent. Who's at fault? A stock Civic is, after all, a perfect first car for anyone.

It's not a very good comparison I guess. But personal accountability ends with the buyer, and that's where it really counts. How many of us have heard stories from people that get hurt say, "I really didn't think I was going to get hurt" -- despite continued pleas and warning from friends, DZ staffers, etc. Some people are like a box of rocks and just a shade more stupid...this appears to be a consistent feature of mankind in every sport.

edit: grammar, spelling
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!
