Skytie on a Wings container

Recommended Posts

I recently got given a free magnetic 'skytie' whilst out at the Vector Festival. I was disappointed to find that due to the Wings reserve flap configuration I couldn't slip the elastic on :( thus its still sat at home.

Has anyone managed to attach a slider stow to a wings container? Or would people advise against it due to the configuration of the top reserve flap?

Thanks
Owen

I advise against all types of slider-holders attached to containers. They are "death on a stick" if you have to cutaway.

You would be far wiser to have slider-catchers sewn to your main risers. A half dozen different types of slider-catchers can be found on the web. My favourite are "Andreas" pattern slider-catchers made of 1.5 inch wide Type 4 tape, but a lot of skydivers seem to prefer Brian Germain's "Slocks."

What I usually see is the elastic cut off and the Skytie (or a copy) sewn to the binding tape at the yoke. If it is sewn part way up, say above the magnet, then it doesn't project too far up the jumper's neck, but still will pull open easily.

(I won't get into rules regarding rig mods in different countries, but this is just what I've seen & done.)

I may be wrong but I think that they tested the magnetic slider keepers for cutaways and the magnets released everytime resulting in clean cutaways.

This is just second hand information from some friends that live in DeLand.

I'm very open to hear reasons why it is "death on a stick". I've been usin a magnetic slider holder for 3000 jumps or so with no problems....I also haven't had a cutaway after my slider has been stowed.

loose lines or bridle making a knot around the magnetic slider keeper could result in a horseshoe mal.

I have seen a "bettered" version with the magnetic slider keeper mounted on velcro instead of the elastic band, and would more easily release
