miked10270 0 #76 October 11, 2003 Actually, this is one of the few things I agree with the Catholic Church on! CONDOMS CAN KILL I know this from being at a party once. After a "few" drinks one of the guys started to do the old "Inflate the condom over his head" trick. Unfortunately, being pi$$ed (and having a small head), he pulled the condom down a bit far & suffered a sudden leak & deflation just as he finished blowing. The condom went over his mouth as well as his nose and the poor bugger nearly suffocated before we could stop laughing. So yes. Condoms can kill! Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Prenait la pisse hors du FrançaisCanadiens méridionaux puisqu'avant lui à la mode. kallend 2,149 #77 October 11, 2003 Quoteit's not THE CHURCH, it's one church, the Roman church. Practically every denomination calls itself "catholic", but only one pretends it has the monopoly on truth. Redacting the gospels to bring them in-line with Roman doctrine is not the way to truth. It's the arrogance of people like you that leads to so much anti-Roman-catholicism. *** Thank you for the insult. It is indeed a privilage to be insulted for my beliefs. And I say that w/o sarcasm. For people who do not believe the way I do, the way that over a billion others do, such statements are incomprehensible. So be it. I refer to the Catholic Church as THE Church b/c it was/is the original Christian Church. Aside from eastern orthodox seperations, the Christian world was Catholic until the time of Henry VIII, Luther, Calvin, etc. Quote Not true. The Roman church as we know it didn't come into existence until the 4th century, when the gospels were re-written to align them with the political needs of the church leaders following a power struggle for control. Why do you think the eastern orthodox split occurred? Why do you believe in the perpetual virginity (another later invention) when the gospels themselves state otherwise?... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one. Sorry, I don't understand your point.... And I think it's not true. The Holy Catholic Church believes in the perpetual virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who conceived with out sin (because she saved Her sexuality and wedded the Holy Spirit of God.) This is a completely different issue, I know. But I just wanted to point that out. MEN: you can't live with 'em, you can't shoot 'em, but you can act psychotic and keep 'em off balance. Kallend, just WHERE in the Gospels, or anywhere else in the Bible is Mary's perpetual virginity refuted? More to the point - just where in the gospels is it proclaimed? Nowhere! It is an invention of the Roman church. Matthew, Mark, and Paul (in the epistle to the Galatians), all suggest that Mary was not a perpetual virgin. If perpetual virginity were SO important, wouldn't you think that the early gospel writers would have mentioned it? The doctrine of perpetual virginity doesn't appear until the 3rd century AD. Since a virgin birth is so remarkable, why isn't it mentioned in ALL the gospels? Matthew 1:25 is interesting, too, as it relates to Mary and Joseph's marital relations. Some apologists for Mariolatry suggest that Aramaic had no distinct word for "brother", and that mention of Jesus's brothers in the gospels actually meant "cousin". (a) That is bogus, Aramaic did have separate words for cousin and brother, but that is irrelevant because (b) so did Greek, the language of the Gospels and the epistles. Apostle Paul was fluent in Greek, and Greek, not Aramaic, was the language of the Galatians, and (c) if the perpetual virginity was SO important, why would Matthew, Mark and Paul have written anything that suggested otherwise and had to be explained away by contrived arguments - that is just ridiculous. They would have gone out of their way to avoid any possible interpretation to the contrary. Now, if you really want to argue that the Bible doesn't mean what it actually says, then you open a whole other can of worms. Perpetual virginity was an invention of the 3rd century that was convenient to the winners of a power struggle within the early church. Among other things, it provided the doctrinal basis for the misogyny of the Roman church.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
 tbrown 26 #81 October 12, 2003 I'm a recovered Catholic myself, but rather than even go there, wanted to address the condom breakage issue. Dr. Alexa Albert did a study on condom usage and breakage a few years back at the Mustang Ranch in Nevada, before the place was closed. What better laboratory than a licensed brothel... Anyway, the study was broken down into a whole series of questions about usage, frequency, incidence of breakage, etc, etc and had some rather surprising results. In most cases, tracking condom use woman by woman, Dr. Albert found that the actual incidence of breakage was less than 1%. There were a few individual women at the Ranch who had unusually high incidences of breakage. The doctor's conclusion was that condoms can be extremely reliable if they are used properly by people who understand their proper usage and limitations. And that slippage and breakage tend to be a great deal more common among people who are careless, ignorant, or intoxicated. The current term is no longer "safe sex", it is "safer sex". Condoms aren't perfect, but they are significantly and vitally effective in preventing a great deal of pregnancies and many STD's, HIV included. Needle exchanges work too, as distasteful as it may be to give away fresh spikes to junkies, every city that's tried it has seen HIV infection rates decline among addict populations. Condoms work. So does common sense and moral fiber. All three work best. Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity !
