The best thing about living in Alabama is that you feel really intelligent when you compare yourself to the masses.;)

Skymama, I went to the Maryland state flagship university, just outside DC, and it was as true there as it is here. Except here people are nicer and there are less politicians. :)

Ya might wanna check out Emerald Coast, in Elberta...Don't know where that is in relation to you, but it's worth a look.Great people and decent accommodations, including an air conditioned packing area.:)They also have one helluva beach boogie every year which includes ...you guessed it: beach jumps!
Not sure what their regular a/c is, but for the boogie they had a rather nice Caravan.
Not only do ya have the beautiful gulf coast below ya for scenery, but ya get to land yer ass on the beautiful white sand on the Fl/Al state line, and head into the Florabama for a cold one!
It's a very rockin', very skydiver friendly bar, with tons of beautiful chicks...skydivers are treated like celebs, and the bar will usually give you a free pitcher or two...Sun, sand, ocean, alcohol; and chicks! What more can ya ask for?B|
You can get a lot more done with a kind word and a gun than with a kind word alone.

Since I lived in B'ham I can tell you the skinny on distances. Skydive Alabama in Cullman and Pell City are the 2 closest dz's that you could easily make your home dz.

ASC in cedartown is a bit of a drive (~2.5 hours) but still in the vicinity. Tullahoma is also a bit of a drive (~3 hours).

Emerald Coast, Gold Coast, and Thomaston are good road trip dzs but are definitely not convinient to B'ham. I would say it's about 4 hours to any one of these.

Just check mapquest and make a judgement call.

I knew I was in a whole other world when I moved to AL back in the early 90's when I turned on the tv during election campaigns for Governor.

they are slowly coming out of dark ages...a friend stil there told me that they recently repealled the blue laws (no alcohol sales on sunday and no draft beer)

Well, like most places, I'm pretty sure just about everything alcohol related is a county thing. Some counties are dry, most not, most only sell liquor at county stores, some license it out, etc etc. And most places still won't sell beer wine or liquor on Sunday.

On any given Sunday...
you'd better have a full cooler!

ps - There's a difference between tradition and "the dark ages," in my opinion.

Nice little town.

I had a friend come to visit while I lived there that was shocked to see downtown Birmingham. I think he was expecting Birmingham to be a bunch of cow pastures and some houses... LOL. Birmingham does have about 1,100,000 people living there. It is an actual city. I'm originally from Atlanta and I have to say... Birmingham was definitely good to me. I had A LOT of kick ass times there! B| (Although it's no Atlanta ;))
