Computers and drinking don't mix

Recommended Posts

Well I have just learned on valuable lesson....If your going to set-up a new computer and fancy toys that that connect to it , you should do it sober...My sad story is as follows...Been having trouble with my old PC and it locked up for about the millionth time in one day so I thought I would see just how well a PC could fly(they fly OK but the landing got ugly). So after that venting I had to buy a new one. I bought a really nice one and then started drinking heavily to sooth the ache that I was feeling in my wallet. Well my scanner and digital camera didn't load up the drivers and upon checking I noticed they were too old and not compatible with XP. At this point I was sober enough to go to the manufactures web sites to see if updated drivers were available. After messing with the scanner I was pretty toasty(and the scanner is useless) The camera looked like there was hope and I followed the directions and it didn't work. Next morning I went out all hung over and bought a new digital camera...installed it and it worked fine. Now after I'm fully sobered up and cleaning up the mess I looked at the directions for my old camera and I had installed it wrong...AUGH>:(...It actually works fine and I wasted money on a camera that I bought on clearance and is non-returnable....well lesson learned...Beer is good and Computers are bad;);)

Ya know - to tell you the truth, I've done the same thing.

I'm a computer programmer and have gone through several computers in just the last few years. My office here at home is looking like a computer parts warehouse... anyway, when I was first starting out in programming I got very frustrated at a program I was developing. I went into mIRC to see if someone there would help me (that was my first mistake, as they're all self absorbed a-holes in there), and when that didn't work out I got so frustrated I slammed my chair into my desk which cause the top shelf of my desk, which had my monitor, scanner and printer to break and fall backwards out the window!

Being on the second floor - it wasn't pretty, and I had to get all new stuff. It was not good at all.

Well maybe we can start a new sport.....We can see who can throw there PC the farthest. We can even break it down into catalogies..monitors..towers...scanners...ect.
And of course it will be mandatory to slam on drink between throws and afterwards we can all sit around and watch the movie Office Space and sympathise with those guys.

I've had an HP notebook computer now for almost three years. Luckily, I purchased the 2 year extended warranty, so I have a total of 3 years of warranty(expires in late Jan). So far, in those 3 years, the thing has been in for repairs about 12-14 times. The keyboard has been replaced 6 times(yes, 6 times - groups of keys just stop working), the monitor 3 times, the hard drive 3 times, the DVD-Rom twice, both 128mb memory cards have been replaced numerous times, the touchpad has been replaced once, the motherboard replaced twice, and the processor replaced once.....I'm probably missing a few things, but that's the major stuff. This is the biggest piece of shit computer I have ever seen. I tried to get HP to replace the computer in the first year(the manuf warranty period) since it is obviously a lemon, but then I found out by talking to others with the same or similar models that it was pretty standard stuff for an HP. The extended contract provider threatened to cancel the remainder of my contract with them after only 6 months due to the inordinate amount of money they had already spent on the thing....but I had a buddy of mine that is a lawyer write a response for me, and they never replied to that. Since then, it's been in half a dozen or more times. I'm sure they've spent $3,000+ on a $1000(when it was brand new) computer, when I only paid $150 for the 2 year service contract.

Well, enough about all the troubles with it...here's what I'm seriously considering doing. Once the warranty expires, and this POS has another major failure, I'm gonna take it skydiving. I'll have it open during freefall, in use, clearly demonstrating the failed item. If it won't work at all, I'll just do it with a shot that you can't tell it's not on, and fake it. Get several points of video. Show my disgust with the POS toward the end of freefall, close it up, and chuck it straight down. Deploy. Get as much video as possible of the thing rapidly approaching the ground, and hopefully see an indication when it hits. Then get video of the remains on the ground. Send this to HP to show them what I think of their products. Maybe even send it to some stations to play it on tv if they so desired. I would love to give HP as much bad press as possible. I hate those shitheads.

A friend of mine tells me to ebay it right now. I think I can even transfer the remainder of the warranty to a new owner. Let them deal with it. Of course, I wouldn't lie to 'em about past problems...so I probably wouldn't get much...but my buddy thinks people will think the opposite, and figure it's got all new parts. Who knows...I haven't decided what to do yet.

Mike
