Job question: Which would you choose?

Recommended Posts

I'd like to get opinions.

I'm in school (nights) right now, for a degree in computer programming. I will have my AS at the end of next year, and then transfering for my BS after that.

I work full time at a local hospital in a VERY busy dept. as the secretary to a VP and director. I'm relied upon alot and its stressful - plus the politics in this place rival the statehouse. I'm sick of it. Yesterday my supervisor (who I do no work for) told me that I can't work out at the gym during lunch anymore becuase its a federal law that I can't eat lunch at my desk. (bull f*&#ing crap).

Today I got a call from a director at one of the other hosptials in our healthcare system - she is looking for a new secretary. She's trying to get me better pay than I'm making now because she really wants me, but it may not be possible to get more money becuase its a much smaller hospital.

The pros:

Only working for one person, not so stressful

Possibly more money

More flexible and less politics

The cons:

No more free gym (I know this seems small to some of you, but its a big reason I've stayed here)

Won't learn as much - this current job I'm learning a ton in and I get alot of respect from everyone other than my supervisor

I LOVE the people I work with!

No real opportunity for growth - which may or may not be a bad thing because I'm going for a degree.

I'm really torn. I don't want to act emotionally on this, becuase at the moment I'm so pissed at my supervisor that I could just up and quit - she's such a bitch. But on the other hand, the flexibility at this other position seems fantastic, and I already know the people I'd work with. The travel will be just a little bit more, but traffic is not good in that section of town. I'm currently 10 min. from home. I love the challenge this current job gives me, and not knowing exactly what this other position is offering (interview is soon) I'm a little bit anxious.

I think I'm writing this down more for me than you guys - but I would still love to get opinions.

From afar, and not know many details, it will probably be more beneficial for you to get the higher paying job. Either way, you will soon finish class andembark on another career, so I don't see a problem paying $50-60 a month for Gym, unless the pay hike is less than that a month!

it's worth remembering that many people rate career development opportunities as a significant motivator in their jobs. Will you be happy knowing that there are fewer oportunities available to you until you complete your degree?

Not trying to make a decision for you, just relating a piece of research I read recently.

Ya.... thats something to consider.

Its a lateral move right now - but a field in 'secretarial service' (don't even know if thats what they call it) is not what I want, and I've been doing it too long as it is. I think I want the flexability to allow me to pursue my passions (be it school, sky diving, traveling) while my husband and I are still 'free' (meaning no kids), and going to a smaller institution (with nicer people) will allow me to do that.

I think I'll go for it if the money is at least at what I'm making now, because the other benefits don't change being the same 'company'.

My first reaction was "Ask your boss for the copy of the federal law that prohibits an employee from eating at their desk." >:(

But after thinking about it and since you will be in the same hospital system, that's probably not a good idea.

How about this:

Alternative 1:

"I can put up with the boss a few more years till finished with school. So I will continue to take advantage of the free gym at lunch, and then (while carrying a pack of cigarettes as I walked out) eat my lunch on my "smoke break".:(

Alternative 2:

Take the job at the smaller hospital realizing that it is only a temporary job until graduation. After all, life is to short to work where you are stressed and unhappy.:)
One of the best jobs I ever had was for less money with absolutly no stress at all. My whole outlook changed and I was a lot easier to live with at home too!

Blue skies,

I'm a federal contractor, and I eat lunch at my desk.:S

Which job will leave you with mental and physical energy for school? If finishing school is your top priority, then you want to make sure your job will support that.

Less stress vs. gym benefits. Heck, you could save money on a gym and just jog and work out around your home. Sure, you'll be starting a new career before too long, but do you want to start it with thinning hair? It looks worse on women than on men. :P

It probably is indirectly illegal. Many companies have this policy, almost none actually enforce it. They do it to cover their ass - if you eat at your desk, and happen to answer your phone, they're supposed to pay you for that time. You could turn around 3 years from now and say "You owe me 600 hours of over-time back pay!"
