My kids have tunnel time!

Recommended Posts

Merrick and I had to go to TN for a family emergency Tuesday and Wednesday so decided on the way back we'd let the kids try the tunnel in Pigeon Forge like I first did when I was 13 (I swear that must've been where the obsession started!) and as an early birthday present for Merrick. They were perfect little flyers..I was so proud :) They told my daughter she had a great arch and was 'doing 115 mph' and the guy helping them flew a little two way with each of them. It was funny, he had to put his arm over Tyler to keep him from flying into the ceiling when they turned the fans up since he only weighs 50 pounds dripping wet when he flew with him.

And as for Merrick, the guy pointed at him after he came back down the first time and did a little flappy sign with his hands asking if he flew ;) We didn't tell them before we went in that we jump..lol.:D It was incredible being in the tunnel...thank heavens there isn't one too close or I'd be in trouble. It wasn't as expensive as I thought, though; almost exactly the same as a regular jump. Not bad.

I guess they now have 3 minutes of freefall each ;) My mom said I screwed up though..now they really will end up becoming like us...obsessed with jumping :) Oh darn!

It is mixed. You have to buy them rigs, but then you do have packers.

ROFL! Buy them rigs! Too funny! Poor things are going to be saying "Mom, I'm saving for a car!" "Well honey, I guess you didn't want that rig very much then, did ya?" So not nice ;)

Thats very cool that you brought your kids to the tunnel.

Thanks, it was amazing. I still remember when I went at 13 vividly..it was the coolest thing ever. Now I'll remember THEM doing it...it was amazing watching them...especially seeing them flying with the other guy. And got Merrick at least one thing that I know he loves for his birthday so far! :D Made the crappy reason for the trip out there better and allowed me to destress a little :)

Cool mom! I can't wait until Perris gets the tunnel done out here. Ihave a long list of family and friends that I am taking. Some of them have to start jumping after that. Instead of a college fund I think I will start a tunnel fund for my kids when I have them. ;)

After the first of the year I am going to take my little one. She is even majking better grades so she can go. Went from a "B" average to all A's and only one B. Yeah, I know, but parents have no choice but to bribe kids...it's just the way of the world.
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama

Both my boys have a few hours of tunnel time from Skyventure. They started flying in there at the age of 9 and 11. They even got to fly in the tunnel before it was open to the public. Both of them have had the bug for wanting to learn to skydive for years.
The dream will finally come true this Thanksgiving. We'll be heading down to Florida so my son, that turned 18 years old, can do his AFF training in the tunnel and then we're heading to Lake Wales for the AFF jumps.
My deal with the boys, I will pay for their training because I want to make sure they get the best they can. Then it's up to them to keep current and buy gear. Naturally they already have friends in the skydiving community that will help them get some good stuff at a discounted rate. (can you hear me now Lisa?)

That's a great idea flyangel! And aweful damn nice of you as well. Our daughter in particular is really itching to go but is only 11 so has a ways to wait still. I don't know if our son will end up doing it or not. He's a little more timid then our daughter and I would never pressure them to jump later at all. In fact, I kinda wish they wouldn't because I'm a worrier :)

Both my sons were timid growing up, but have changed over the years. Just wait and listen to what they have to say, that will be the best indicator as to what they will want to do when they are old enough.

Worry? Who me? Let me tell you a story.

Last year at the WFFC, I was give the honor of working with the head honcho's children after they had graduated AFF. I've know these kids since they were babies and in diapers. Talk about a nervous wreak, it was like I was jumping with my own kids. I was so worried, that I made them jump with their cell phones in case we landed out. Which we did, twice.
After a few days I started to relax, but I've got a feeling I'm going to be going through that all again while my son is doing the AFF jumps. I know I want to be at the DZ when he's jumping, I just can't decide if I want to ride in the same plane as him. He might see just how nervous I am, and I don't want that to rub off on him.

I wish someone had told my parents that. My "bribe" was dinner and a roof over my head.

:D:D:D That's the same bribe I use with my boys. Not to mention they are allowed to use the electricity that I pay for.

LOL! Yeah the old "do you think all this is free?!" speech! :D

I can imagine how nervous you were teaching them! Samantha went up with us when we did a jump once and I kept thinking "Ty's still on the ground..what if the plane crashes and he loses his whole family in one shot!" I'm a rather morbid thinking sorta person :S :D

I thought Sam would be freaking out about seeing us get out. She just shrugged and started telling me about the instruments in the plane. Geez. I used to hate watching Merrick go while we were on student status!

I heard they were getting a tunnel somewhere in northern california in the next year or so - my 10 year old is so upset that she doesn't get to jump out of planes with her dad and big sister (yet).

I would love to get her and her seven year old brother some ff time - and my wife too (she keeps insisting she'll go up on the plane to watch my exit - but is a long-way from "taking the plunge" herself...even as a tandem. Maybe some tunnel time could change that line-of-thinking? :S:S:S... Not.;))

If anyone knows when/where one will be opening in northern CA - please let me know.

thanks,

- Jeff

We so think the same. When my husband was alive, we never, ever got on the same plane for fear that it would go in and leave our children alone.

Both my boys have taken rides in the jump plane and watched us jump (at different times). They loved it. It was funny to see them so small with big rigs on.

On the tunnel in Northern Calif. Rest assure, if it's on the Skyventure web site, then it will happen. It takes some time to get the financial and permits done.
(that comes from a very dependable source ;))
