Blue Angels are circling me

Recommended Posts

There's an airshow in Miramar this weekend, and the Blue Angels are practicing there. My building is about 2 miles from Miramar, and they seem to be using the building (tallest one around) as their turnaround point. Consequently I am constantly seeing them circle the building, close enough to make the windows rattle. They look like they're on my level when they fly by (I'm on the 6th floor, about 120 feet high) but that's probably an illusion.

that's cool...

at my old office (next to moffet field) they used to have the airshow practice runs the friday before the actual show...we would have all sorts of plans doing passes over our parking lot and stuff...setting off car alarms. it was awesome to see it all up close.

A year and a half ago, I heard the distinctive sound of a military jet. It turned out to be a n F-4 and and F-14. It was around 12:30, and I looked out my office (22nd floor) to see these guys vector out over to the valley.

Five minutes later, they came back the other way. Another five minutes, back again. By this point, I was ready to move in to tell my boss that I was going home. What other reason would there be for a Tomcat and a Phantom (the F-4 did strike me as odd) circling downtown LA but to shoot down the hijacked passenger jet heading straight for my office?

I found out the next day they were preacticing flyovers at Dodger Stadium for opening day. Nice of them to warn the populace (the 911 lines were flooded with inquiries).

I got the same show last month. I think they were using my building for the turn around point also.

My guess was that they were no more 200 feet up, so if you're at 120 ft., you've got to be really close. I was judging their altitude from ground level, and seeing how close they were to an adjacent building for a reference.

I thought doing video on the weekends was a cool job, but those guys have me beat hands down.

A couple of years ago I sat on a boat, anchored a couple of hundred yards off shore directly in the flight path for the run way at Point Mugu Naval Air Stations Air Show.
It seemed like they were using the boat to dive bomb on as they hit the "Hard Deck" for the approach to do each aerial stunt in front of the crowd.

Totally awesome vantage point to see an air show.

I too get free seats to watch the Blue Angels practice. I live close to the Fort Collins/Loveland Airport and when there is going to be an airshow that they perform at, they practice right over head.
It's kind of unnerving listening to that, thinking we're under attack or something.

J.P. Bill will invite any one that will come. I've proven it. I got a wedding and party invitation out of him. And I wasn't even serious about going. Does that mean that he's desperate for friends? Can't be, he's got a great wife now.

They are a great bunch of guys and always put on a wonderful show. I've lived on Navy bases most of my adult life including Miramar (till the Marines kicked us out) - even now that I'm off base, I'm still in the landing pattern so the jet noise is something I'm accustomed too. When we were stationed in Pensacola a lot of the Blues lived on base and one of my best friends husband was on the team a couple years back. They look pretty cute in their tight blue suits too:P I'm just waiting for a female pilot to join the team... they did have a female flight surgeon not too long ago and she was a sweetheart. There are enough women flying pointy nose aircraft today so hopefully we'll get one soon.

[The Blue Angels are cool, almost as good as the Thunder Birds!

No way ! Seen 'em both. The Thunderbirds fly this way, and that way, and this way again, and that way again..... Ho hum....

The Blue Angels rule. They know to wring the last drop of performance out of their planes and make an audience say "WOW !". I've seen six Angels fly into Frisco UNDER the Golden Gate Bridge, trailing colored smoke. Nobody does it like the Angels. And as Carly Simon once said, nobody does it better.

I thought the TBirds and the Blue Angels were both very cool, but for a crowd pleaseing proformance the team from up north did that. The Snowbirds just seemed to keep things going more often then the Blue Angels did. The Snow Birds almost always had 2 planes over show line at all times, but the BA and Thunderbirds both had lapses of 45-60 seconds with no planes in sight. Granted both teams were doing way more high speed passes then the Snow Birds, but after having the honor of watching all 3 in the same day... the Snow Birds impressed me the most. Flying the 9 plane Concord roll... :o

Miramar Air Show, this weekend. I'm sure a web search will reveal the details. Since our house is about 1/4 mile from the base we'll be watching it from our back yard.

Nice! Very nice!
