sangiro 26 #1 October 13, 2003 Heya all, As I mentioned in an earlier email we are revamping the entire Dropzone.com log in system. To do so we need to migrate all existing users to a new database. The scripts doing this migration validates all email addresses before the user is moved. Please check your email address in your FULL PROFILE and make sure it: 1) is a valid email address 2) does not have typos (i.e. people forget the .com or type ,com) 3) does not have some kind of "spam protector" phrase or word. (like me@nospam_eartlink.com, or meateartlinkdotcom) In the new login application you will be required to maintain a valid email address in your account. This will not be shared with the public or appear in the forums. You can enter a second email that will be your public email address that will be displayed here. The current "full profile" and "forum profiles" will be merged. Go to the myDZ link in the top right corner of any page or click on the link below. make sure you are logged in and click on "modify my Profile" to update your information. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/login/login.cgiSafe swoops Sangiro
Gawain 0 #2 October 13, 2003 You mean the "Real email address" not the "Display email address" correct? So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! sangiro 26 #3 October 13, 2003 No. I said click on the link and validate the email address in your FULL PROFILE. There's only one email address there... Safe swoops Sangiro

Blahr 0 #6 October 13, 2003 Howdy, OK I must be dumb for saying this, but the addresses listed in the FULL PROFILE are available for everyone to look at by clicking the "Full Profile" link by their avatar. I used to have my real one there but removed it because I was actually getting spam because of it. It appeared that some less scrupulous gear shops were farming addresses from there and sending advertisements. Am I nutz?
AggieDave 6 #7 October 13, 2003 QuoteI used to have my real one there but removed it because I was actually getting spam because of it. Same here, sort of. When I put a spam line in my e-mail, my spam dropped by almost 30%.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." sangiro 26 #8 October 13, 2003 I understand that. I can ssure you (think how many times my email address is appears on this site!!) I am fighting the spam war every day! If you don't want to update your email address now, then keep checking back to this thread on a daily basis. I'll let you knwo just before we do the migration and you can update it then. After the move the current profile will not be available anymore. The email address will become part of your Dropzone.com account (which will not be public), and you will be able to type whatever "bogus" or anti-spam words you like into your new profile again.Safe swoops Sangiro
flyingferret 0 #9 October 13, 2003 How does it 'verify' said email address? Mine is a 'real' email, but I never check it and it is chock full of spam. Is it important that the syntax be correct? Or must it function and respond?-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
Gawain 0 #10 October 13, 2003 One more question, does our dropzone.com address count? So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! sangiro 26 #11 October 14, 2003 It simply checks to see whether the email address comply with the format of a working email address. It does not send an email to check if it works. With that being said, the new system will require a working email address where it will send a validation email after signup for you to activate your account. I may do this with existing accounts as well at some stage. Yes, a dropzone.com email address will work for now, but will not be accepted in the future... think about it, it doesn't really make sense... if you loose your password and request that it be emailed to you, then due to the fact that you don't have yopur password you will also not be able to get into your dropzone.com mail... how will you pick up your new password. If you can, use and external email address. You can always use your dropzone.com address as the address you display in your final profile. fudd 0 #12 October 14, 2003 This is why we have free email services like Hotmail. I've got a hotmail address I use every time I need to supply an email address on the net. It recieves between 50-150 spammails a day. I take a quick glance to look for personal mails, but don't care if I miss one before I delete all mails in my inbox. If I need to recover a password, It's still pretty easy to find. katamann@hotmail.com There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't. sangiro 26 #15 October 17, 2003 A follow-up on this post: It is VERY IMPORTANT that you check and make sure you have a working NON dropzone.com email address in your full profile. I will likely send a validation email to everyone when they log in the first time after the new system has been implemented. You will need an email address that you can access to activate your account. * Read this post * Update you email addressSafe swoops Sangiro
EricaH 0 #16 October 17, 2003 This & my work e-mails are the only one's I can access... Do you absolutely swear that our addresses will not be used for anything other than this validation? and will not be given out to anyone? I understand from a previous post that once the validation is completed, we can change it to something else (but somewhere we'd want a password clue sent) - correct? There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear. PMS #227 (just like the TV show)
