Amazon 7 #26 October 21, 2003 QuoteIt's kinda funny though, because this is my first (uh-oh) "Seattle weather" moment. I have been here since early June (with a brief intermission in July) and I have yet to experience this! So as I was driving today I was just looking around saying to myself "Oh, so this is what everyone is talking about!" The weather has lulled everyone into submission this summer.. this.... is near record setting for OCT but its a taste of things to come I think.. Its been FAR too dry for the last few years.. and MOM Nature is just making up for it I think. I am SOOOOO glad I went with my instincts and headed to Snohomish on Sat... it was a glorius day..and I managed to get 3 jumps in out of the Caravan before it dissappeared for the year.. and having a Bald Eagle flying around under me on one jump when I opened over the river was just kinda special. There are few places anywhere where you can get a moment in the sky like that. Jeanne
Muenkel 0 #27 October 21, 2003 In New England we have had almost perfect fall weather. Sunny days, temps in the 60's and 70's and the trees are doing what they do best. We deserve it after last winter and the totally rained out spring. Chris _________________________________________ Chris
Amazon 7 #28 October 21, 2003 I know there is a Nor' easter out there with Ya'lls name on it... just wait.... Jeanne
Muenkel 0 #29 October 21, 2003 You're probably right Jeanne. But usually when the northeast gets a severe winter, it is usually followed by a mild one. But who knows? I have no scientific proof of this theory. It usually depends on how the jetstream settles. Casch 0 #30 October 21, 2003 We had a great day of jumping at K-pow on saturday , it was overcast most of the day, but the clouds were well beyond 14K it seemed, got full altitude all day. Were the winds really weird at Snohomish too? We had 30-40kt south winds above 3K, and just a North breeze below. That dividing line kept getting lower as the day went on. Definately through everyones landing patterns through a loop
Amazon 7 #31 October 21, 2003 We had MAD screaming UPPERS in the morning.. I mean when spotting from 14k the damn airplane was nearly not moving across the ground.. I think the 12k uppers at Snohomish were listed at 56 knots when I got there for the first jump.. and Brian did not give us a long enough spot.. I BARELY made it back across the river... causeing me to watch below me a LOT as I was trying to get to the airport...that is when I saw the Bald Eagle below me flying over the river looking for late salmon coming in. The Winds were out of the SW.... coming right up from the gap south of the Olympic Mountains. so it was funnelling into the mountians passes by us. There was a wind shear at about 3000 to 3500 on the first jump that was bouncing the airplane (Grand Caravan) around like it was a little leaf in the wind. I opened below 3k on all my jumps due to this. I was sure the weather would set in at any time all day but the big weather front stayed off the coast all day... coming ashore Sat night Sun morning. At Snohomish the ground winds were squirrly and variable untill afternoon when it shifted to the SW as well. With winds like this does ANYONE wonder why I want a Samurai airlocked canopy... it was really bouncy but at least the winds on the ground stayed manageable all day. Our weather until the rains today have been good. In fact it's not cold, just very very wet. We really haven't had much rain, so we do need it, but not all at once. Casch 0 #35 October 21, 2003 That sounds exactly like how it was at Kapowsin. Haha we sent the 182 up for the first load of the day with Andy and his GF April. When they cut the engine, the plane literally stopped. It wasn't moving forward at all. Definately a sight to see. Before that I have never seen an airplane just hovering
NoShitThereIWas 0 #36 October 21, 2003 Okay, Okay, so you got me there ... You and all of those Alaskans. Trust me if I could stand the rain I would be there in a heartbeat. Or Oregon. But I NEED SUNSHINE. I envy you up there with the orcas though (sigh) I have never been as far North as Washington but I know it is beautiful country. I'll make it up there one of these days.
