Less Typing to Enter www.[name].com addresses

Here's a handy hint for saving on keystrokes when typing in URLs in the .com top level domain that start with "www." In Internet Explorer, you can just type the domain name (for example, if the URL is www.microsoft.com, just type "microsoft") and hold down the CTRL key while you press ENTER. This only works on URLs in the .com domain.

This only works for companies who've paid for that service to work. It also only works in Internet Explorer.

That service is expected to be dropped in future versions of IE.

Eh? Not the "... did you mean to go to one of these sites?" thing. Hold ctrl when hitting enter, and it just automatically puts www. at the front and .com at the end of whatever you typed in.

On Mac IE you don't even have to use CTRL. It's just the default behavior. If the browser can't find the domain you typed, it adds ".com" and tries again.

Whether or not it will work without the "www." is up to the system administrator of the domain. It's a small extra step that some people are too lazy to do.
