PhillyKev 0 #101 October 24, 2003 Did you read the article? It's describing a system of education designed to systematically brain wash the general population into not wanting to succeed. You don't think that where impressionable children spend 40 hours a week has any long term affect on their motivation or aptitude? Reform the education system and we will reform society. QuoteIf you want to succeed you can. If you don't, you won't. That's very true. That's why we should teach people to want to succeed, not dissuade them from trying. storm1977 0 #102 October 24, 2003 I agree with you, we should train them to want to succeed, but.. with the way things are now it isn't going to happen. We have elementary school sports where they aren't even allowed to keep score. Why? Because we don't want to hurt anyones feelings... Ohhh isn't that sweet. No - It is building a generation of softies who don't know what winning and loosing is about. So, when they get older they don't know how to deal with defeat, and have no drive to win. I think we should go back to when teachers could actually punish student for their actions. Put a little fear in their life. Push them to succeed. Drive some freakin disipline into them. I agree that's ridiculous and stupid. QuoteI think we should go back to when teachers could actually punish student for their actions. Put a little fear in their life. Push them to succeed. Drive some freakin disipline into them. Turn them into good little automatons? I have no problem with teaching discipline and commitment, but it needs to reward with satisfaction and enjoyment. Not just grades and accolades. Kids need to learn that they can work hard to enjoy life, rather than enjoy life despite having to work hard.
storm1977 0 #104 October 24, 2003 Never thought I would say this: Quote Kids need to learn that they can work hard to enjoy life, rather than enjoy life despite having to work hard. I agree with you Kev 100% .. WOW that was tough to get out. But, this is a societal problem. School programs won't get us there. A new way of thinking on the part of our teachers may. BTW- When I have kids...they are going to private school. I will get some nuns to look after them. ----------------------------------------------------- Sometimes it is more important to protect LIFE than Liberty
TaeKwonDoDo 0 #105 October 24, 2003 QuoteWhy is the public education system the way it is? Because ultra-right-wing capitalists wanted it that way: The Educational System Was Designed to Keep Us Uneducated and Docile You are kidding, right? - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
