Zeemax 0 #1 October 25, 2003 I dont know if you guys have guide dogs over there (you know, for blind people), theres quite a few over here. Anyways... The guide dog association here lost a lot of money in the last couple of years (its not goverment funded and relies on donations etc) and they couldn't afford to kennel the dogs while they were in there intensive training. As a short term measure they found homes in the local areas to house them. They found from this though that the dogs really benefited from this and so now use local homes to 'board' the dogs while they train. I got a leaflet through the door a couple of months ago asking if i'd be interested to which i replied 'hell yes' Few training sessions later (you have to know how to treat them, what they need to do etc, cant undo any of the training they receive) and for this weekend i have my first loaner dog!! You normally get them for 10 weeks, but this is just for the weekend while they're usual boarders are away. Her name is beth, and she is the most beautiful and most intelligent dog i've ever met. Its going to be very hard to give her back after the weekend Phoenix Fly - High performance wingsuits for skydiving and BASE Performance Designs - Simply brilliant canopies
skybytch 273 #2 October 25, 2003 Awwww, she's beautiful. In the US there are several guide dog "schools". At least one uses 4H members (4H is an organization for kids) and others to raise puppies for them. My family seriously considered doing that one year when I was a kid but we didn't think we could handle getting attached to a pup than having to give him/her back. It's a good thing you're doing. She say sit, she sits, you say lie down, she lies down..! When shes on her lead shes even better, when you approach a door, she sits down and waits to be called!! I would definatly participate in that, But with how I spoil dogs the trainers would want to kill me after one weekend. But the dog would be happy Handguns are only used to fight your way to a good rifle
 Zeemax 0 #8 October 26, 2003 tell me about it... its so hard!! You cant just let them out into the garden. They have to go to a special area at certain times to 'spend' (that phrase cracks me up) and they cant be in the garden until then incase they try to go again. We cant go for walks either as they're supposed to be relaxing, which is cool tbh as i'm lazy! We've been playing around the house all weekend, its so cool, she just never seems to leave my side Phoenix Fly - High performance wingsuits for skydiving and BASE Performance Designs - Simply brilliant canopies
 freefallfreak 0 #9 October 26, 2003 Thanks, dude...it's a good thing you are doing. My dog sleeps next to me as well. I couldn't imagine having an awesome dog like that for a short time then having to give her back. It was sad, but i just have to tell myself what she's going on to do in life, help people.
