Marz 0 #1 October 30, 2003 So I finally started my MS medication today. I went to the hospital and the nurse showed me how to inject myself. Honestly, I was shit scared but skydiving taught me one thing - When scared, take a deep breath and just jump. You'll have a little while to think about it before you have to do anything. So I counted to three, took a deep breath and poked myself. It went ok. Then the nurse tells me that I need to do this three times a week, preferably at night because of the side-effects. She said I would feel flu-like. Well, Now I know why I have to do this at night!!!! I went back to work at 11 AM this morning, and by noon, I felt like I had a fever. By 1PM, I was freezing my ass off and actually shivering. My boss called my wife to come pick me up. I went home and slept until right now. I'm banking on getting used to these meds and that they will make me feel better but I gotta say that today SUUUUUUUUCKED!!!!!!!!! I guess I'm posting this for those who followed the progession of this saga... This was one fuck of a year! Marz _________________________________________ Did I just kill another thread? McDuck 0 #3 October 30, 2003 Dude, you have my respect and admiration. I'm okay with needles if someone else is doing the sticking, mainly because I can look away if I need to, but I don't think I could manage to inject myself. <<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Edited to add: Oh, and take good care of yourself, please. I lost my mother because she had MS (and some other complications) and didn't believe she needed alter her lifestyle at all. RkyMtnHigh 0 #4 October 30, 2003 Hi Marz, I'm the Avonex Area Business Manager in Colorado. As far as the flu like symptoms go, yes you will have that with all interferons. If you give your injection 2 hours before you go to sleep, you should be able to sleep it off. Also, make sure that the day after you don't have a million activities planned because that physical exhaustion will increase your flu like side effects. Hope that's helpful! I admire the MS community so much. It's because of a recent patient program that I attended that I began skydiving..MS has changed my life for the positive! _________________________________________
Marz 0 #5 October 30, 2003 Thanks alot! I want to continue skydiving as long as I can. I guess it's a matter of listening to your body. After much consultation, I chose Rebif over Avonex, just because the injection is easier and it's been around a little longer (I think?). I'll live through this, I'm sure. RkyMtnHigh 0 #6 October 30, 2003 Avonex just entered the market in Canada, however in the US we're about to celebrate our 8th year on the market. Hey, one of my top MS-ologists has a website that is really comprehensive about complementary alternative medicine, yoga, pilates, body building, etc. They have had more than 20K hits and have had great responses to their surveys. It is: www.ms-cam.org Let me know what you think. I know a nurse who's husband and son both have MS. I think so much is about keeping a positive attitude, reduce stress as much as possible, try to avoid fatigue. Her son, Jeff, is a body builder and does yoga and is doing GREAT! I'm here whenever you need support or just want someone to listen. _________________________________________
