KerMor 0 #27 November 1, 2003 Quotea big guy comes in to do a tandem. i put on the tandem rig...walk up to the student and introduce myself as the tandem master. i usually say something about how when we leave the plane, i'll need them to help me out and throw the drogue because i can't reach it. That was a MUST SEE... next time we need a video. Two tandem masters at my previous home dz at about 5000ft, when their students started to get really nervous, took the rig user manual and started arguing about the use of one handle debating loudly on it pointing at the manual as reference. That was really funny for us in the plane, but not so much for the students strapped to them Another cool thing to do, when a big groups is using commercial (low-fare) airline (to go to a boogie), is to make other passengers believe that it was your own responsibility to bring your parachute with you in case of emergencies you would be amazed of the amount of people that do actually believe you. You can't determine the length of your life - but you can control its height and depth.
airann 1 #28 November 1, 2003 Quotewear their helmet and goggles when going through a drive through Somewhere, I saw that in a video. I cant recall now who took it.... It might have been a personal tape or something else, cant recall. Funny, I do remember. About messing with tandems, ... some of it, that I have seen, is alright. Some of it is going too far. The degree of scare tactics is different from one DZ to the next, I have noticed. Because I am near the tandems in the aircraft, I have had to (or felt like I should) help some folks out. I have done this since I started. Yet once I couldnt get this one girl to stop crying hysterically. Finally, patty-cake worked. I may have posted that experience before and again, I have no idea how I came up with patty-cake. I think that near jump time, if the tandem is relieved and feels better - the more likely it is that they jump again. This instead of; I almost died, Whew, I never will do that again. I have heard this from many, many persons as they find out that I jump. ~AirAnn~
AggieDave 6 #29 November 1, 2003 As a TM, I "play" with only certain tandem students. I'm getting pretty good at reading the student initially to decide if I can or not. I do NOT like others to pull out jokes on them. If I'm joking with them, then fine, you can, but if I'm not, there is a reason. I've spent a few rides to altitude holding a girls hand that I was about to take on a jump. Talking to her and keeping her calm. Others its full on screw with the student. They think its funny and everyone has a good laugh.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
Katzeye 0 #30 November 1, 2003 AggieDave - point well taken. I should point out that when/if I saw something to the tandem student, it's done with a smile and a wink (after a good pause) and only with Tandem masters that know me... or I owe one to. Another thing Brown used to do (well Dave on video), is once the wheels leave the plane is yell "here's my favorite part - NO REFUNDS" Usually the whole plane ends up yelling the "NO REFUNDS" part. It's cool and usually gets a chuckle. Is a chicken omelette redundant?
airann 1 #31 November 1, 2003 That is where I am going with this. I think that people shouldnt go to complete overboard. That TM and videographer know the mindset of the jumper. So, looking to them for a clue is key. Majority of tandems, (I have seen), joke back and forth. It gets pretty funny. I do know one TM gives the 'seriously cut it out' signal. I made the mistake of only a slight joking. I got the Look from Hell and the cut it out signal. I still vividly remember that one. If looks could kill... Dang ... He doesnt like it on almost any of his tandems, I found out. ~AirAnn~
