Gawain 0 #1 November 1, 2003 About Wireless Number Portability (WNP): Beginning November 24 this year, wireless subscribers will be able to "port" their wireless phone numbers to different wireless service providers and local exchange carriers (I don't know if CLECs are included in this). Here's a link with more information. Whereas in the past, if you chose to switch carriers (say from Cingular to Verizon Wireless), this would necessitate a change in wireless phone numbers. This standard was not easy to come by, and I expect that there will be glitches in call routing and signalling. However, one thing we will see as a direct result of this new requirement will be a new price war between the carriers. This is good news for us. Is there any bad news? Maybe. Many of the carriers have been scheming to increase fees or restrict porting hours for such features, but one obvious carrier has fought these efforts (VZW) - see the filing and release here. So, rejoice soon. If you're tired of system-busy signals and spotty coverage with T-Mobile in some areas, you may be able to switch to VZW. If you wish you could use your Sprint PCS number/service overseas, you will be able to switch to AT&T or T-Mobile GSM services. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! bobsled92 0 #3 November 2, 2003 Hi Max, I'm speaking strictly about LAND lines: We Started service orders for Local LPN Verizon, for numbers within the area code. CLECs have to make the offer and upgrade thier X-lats. The other Companies that don't own any actual phone equip or lines (majority of CLECS) just re-sale of our equip, numbers and Lines as Number Portalbility Lines. It takes up the use of 3 numbers for 1. 1=original, 2=npl to new area, 3=actual ckt ID# for new location. (cost$$=??) for some it is worth it ie.
