smiles 0 #1 November 5, 2003 ....pulled into parking lot 730 a.m. this morn, got up to 5th level and found tons of empty spaces- was going around 10-20 mph when turning into 4th space on my right and KABAMMMM- the car accelerated at enormous speed smuck into cement wall of my stall - the air bag in my face, car filled with horrible putrid smell smoke/powder or whatever- my chest hurts still/ inner arm skin burnt off by bag. WTF happened? ..so little time to react- Smucked the front end up so bad it bounced back 2ft. from the wall plastered with pieces of bumper My precious baby 2002 Honda Accord SE- never had a problem with it. Was hard to ask anyone today what could have happened as those I did said "you must of slammed on your gas instead of your brake"...ddddduuuuuuhhhhh I could scream. So freaky how you can recall every second with skydiving- I know for sure with the split second- my foot was plastered to the brake when the car bounced from the wall. My mind is spinning as I do not know until it is totally inspected by insurance company- anyone know WTF the problem could be???????? gas petal stuck/throttle cable/butterfly on throttle body sticking/cruise control malfuck- ya, its just a car (the sweetest I've ever had the pleasure of owning) thanx SMiles
jmpnkramer 0 #2 November 5, 2003 Quotegas petal stuck/throttle cable/butterfly on throttle body sticking/cruise control malfuck- Could have been the Gas Pedal. Most likely it had to do with the throttle. I would hope that you did not have the cruise control on in the parking lot. That is aso a remote possibility. Is it a stick shift? Sometimes when you hit the clutch it will coast at a faster rate then the car was originally going. You seem to have a majority of the answers though. Sorry to hear of the misfortune. Try and have a good day though. Laters, KRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The REAL KRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMER! "HESITATION CAUSES DEATH!!!" Nightingale 0 #3 November 5, 2003 Cruise control turns off the second you hit the brake, so if it was cruise control, then he didn't have his foot on the brake, and if he had his foot on the brake, it couldn't have been cruise control. other than that, dunno. Remster 30 #4 November 5, 2003 Quoteit couldn't have been cruise control. In theory. In practice, there have been reports of cruise control malfunctions EVEN with it turned off (not just on standby after you hit the brakes, but actually off). That was a few years ago, and AFAIR, it wasnt hondas. Its electronics, so there is always a chance it mals. I'm not saying it was a CC problem, but dont just dismiss it because you hit the brakes.Remster
RevJim 0 #5 November 5, 2003 Also, if you are driving a manual transmission (sometimes it happens in an auto, but it's quite a bit more rare), are in a mid range gear (2nd - 3rd)and hit the brake fairly firmly (like turning into a driveway) without pushing in the clutch, the engine will lag badly. If it goes under 500 rpm (aprox), the computer will take over and apply throttle to keep the engine from dying. So, think of it in these steps: 1. Drive along, 15 or so mph, in 3rd gear. 2. See your turn at the last second, or just wait until the last second (as if you were in a hurry). 3. Turn wheel and apply brake firmly, without downshifting (possible in an auto too). 4. Engine lags, computer tries to compensate, and surges you ahead. This is the same basis for surges at highway speed. In an automatic, things may happen too fast for the comoputer to compensate. Stomp brake, engine lags, computer compensates, thinking the engine is about to die, and the transmission downshifts at the same time. Now you have an angine that is unencumbered by lag, a transmission that essentially just hit passing gear, and a computer about to "give it the gas". Scary combination, but it happens every day. It's your life, live it! Karma RB#684 "Corcho", ASK#60, Muff#3520, NCB#398, NHDZ#4, C-33989, DG#

JohnRich 4 #7 November 5, 2003 Check the motor mounts, which attach the engine to the frame. If those are broken loose, it can allow the engine to twist sideways, pulling the throttle cable, just like stepping on the gas. I had that happen to me when I was 18 years old. Dad didn't believe me, but we switched cars for a while so he could see for himself. Sure 'nuff, it did it to him too. It was very difficult for the brakes to stop 400 runaway horsepower from ramming me into the car in front of me.
