PLFKING 4 #1 November 5, 2003 I bought a Fujifilm A210. My IT guy says I can't download pics because our system is WindowsNT, and I need to be on Windows2000. My camera is USB, and we're Serial ???? He said it may work if I can find a cable to convert USB to Serial. I'm sure I'm missing something here. Can anyone enlighten me ? I've got naked pics of Andrea that I can't download -- so if someone can help.....Don
Remster 30 #2 November 5, 2003 PM'ed you my snail mail address... send me the camera, and I'll download them Remster
CrazyIvan 0 #3 November 5, 2003 Bad news, Windows NT doesn't support USB, you can try something like this: http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/USA19W/, but the problem would be the USB connector on your camera, I'm not sure, but I think such connector might not be available. You can do some research here: http://www.belkin.com__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you.
fudd 0 #4 November 5, 2003 I've never played with WinNT and USB, but I would find it very strange if it's not possible to get USB support on NT. You have to load some device drivers, and NT is not so very good at hot-pluggable devices. (expect bluescreens!) Frankly I understand if the IT staff wont use it resources on research and configuration to get it to work. (assuming this is a private cam.) You could tell the IT guy that you got naked pictures of some girls, and that you can't download those to your home computer because of your wife . Then you will have it up and running in notime. Just expect that all the pictures you download also get downloaded to the IT guys hard drive . As for gettin a serial to USB converter. Haven't heard about it, and I don't think it exists. Serial ports ar WAY to slow for modern digital cameras. If you got a laptop, get a PCMCIA reader for whatever type of memory card your camera uses. Best advice...do it at home. There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.
wildblue 7 #5 November 5, 2003 Quote but I would find it very strange if it's not possible to get USB support on NT NT doesn't support USB. Some usb devices actually have the drivers need to work on NT, but chances are that yours doesn't. Finding a cheap, xD card reader, serial, is going to be tough too. You're probably out of luck - upgrade to 2000 if you can, or borrow someone's computer. CrazyIvan - yeah, that's backwards. I don't think a converter for USB device to serial even exists. If it did, it wouldn't be very cheap.it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality

It does exists, and yes, is NOT cheap, but as I pointed out in my previous reply, the connector ON the camera is the problem, it might be a little one and the adapter usually comes with a standard.__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. PLFKING 4 #7 November 5, 2003 Thanks, guys, for the answers.....looks like i managed to f*** myself yet again. Anybody want to buiy a new digital camera ? Only used two weekends, and is altitude-resistant to at least 14,000 feet. (...and I don't really have naked pics of Andi....I just knew I'd get faster answers if I said I did....) DShiznit 0 #8 November 5, 2003 Dude, it's not the camera, it's the OS. NT has never worked with USB, DVD, etc, hence Win 2K being released. Don't sell your camera. Everything is USB based (or firewire). Do you not have another computer?? edit - NT is like 4+ years old and is several times outdated.

I think you're thinking about it wrong - that adapter you put the link to is for a serial device to plug into a USB host, not the other way around. You could always get a pcmcia card reader, and then the adapter to put it in a desktop... but by that point, you've spent $100 probably. happythoughts 0 #21 November 5, 2003 Let me throw in my .02. I have WinNT on my play computer. I have a dual boot set up for Win98 also. My Sony HandyCam came with a serial port. Transfer time is minimal from a 4mb memory stick for 40 pics. Since this thing is set up to be USB, why not get a copy of Win98, dual boot it, and do that? I know, I know.....and I've had the $ to do it since my home PC blew up in February. Just too lazy to go through the hassle.....but it's starting to get cooler, which means more inside time, which means I'll get one soon. I would really hate to miss any more of your's and Seth's witty repartee. EDIT -- at least this thread is providing helpful info for my PC purchase. Thanks guys. No dude, the adapter will have 2 connectors, one USB end and one SERIAL end, you'll plug the USB to the camera and the SERIAL to the PC, I've checked and this camera has a SMALL USB connector and there's no adapter with this size of adapter.__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you.
