billvon 3,125 #1 November 5, 2003 So after months of campaigning, arguing about, and figuring out how to fund the 87 billion dollar package for continued occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan - almost no one in the Senate showed up to vote on it. Republican lawmakers insisted on a roll call vote, so no individual senator could be tracked down on how he voted. It didn't matter much anyway - only six senators even showed up for the vote. Which, of course, is politics as usual. If the coming years in Iraq prove to be a quagmire reminiscent of Vietnam, republican senators can say "Hey, don't look at me, I didn't vote for that money; I wanted us out of there." If Iraq turns into a thriving democracy that looks more like Arizona than a Middle Eastern country, democratic senators can claim "Hey, I knew this would happen - that's why I didn't vote against that $87 billion." No one has to take any responsibility! Kudos for the six senators who _did_ show up, though, including the guy who cast the one dissenting vote. I may not agree with them but at least they bothered to do their jobs.
