The brave men and women of our legislature

Recommended Posts

So after months of campaigning, arguing about, and figuring out how to fund the 87 billion dollar package for continued occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan - almost no one in the Senate showed up to vote on it. Republican lawmakers insisted on a roll call vote, so no individual senator could be tracked down on how he voted. It didn't matter much anyway - only six senators even showed up for the vote.

Which, of course, is politics as usual. If the coming years in Iraq prove to be a quagmire reminiscent of Vietnam, republican senators can say "Hey, don't look at me, I didn't vote for that money; I wanted us out of there." If Iraq turns into a thriving democracy that looks more like Arizona than a Middle Eastern country, democratic senators can claim "Hey, I knew this would happen - that's why I didn't vote against that $87 billion." No one has to take any responsibility!

Kudos for the six senators who _did_ show up, though, including the guy who cast the one dissenting vote. I may not agree with them but at least they bothered to do their jobs.
