Nightingale 0 #4 November 9, 2003 Its a catch 22. The cleaning company violated 2 laws. 1. Hiring undocumented immigrants is illegal. 2. Not paying minimum wage is illegal. The men in question were working for the cleaning company. If the cleaning company did not pay them at least minimum wage, they were in violation of labor laws. period. The men's immigration status is another matter. If anything, perhaps this will drive home to the company and other companies that hiring undocumented workers to save money is no longer a viable tactic. the company needs to face the consequences of both violations, and walmart needs to be more careful about who they contract with. Nightingale 0 #6 November 9, 2003 They do pay taxes. They pay sales taxes every time they buy something. The company they work for pays its taxes off profits from their labor. Also, many companies who employ undocumented workers do so without knowing it, because the workers have fake social security numbers.
