first intentional chop

Recommended Posts

so cool, so much fun, a must for anyone willing to try one. i've had a reserve ride, so it's not my first cut-away, but so amazing to chop it and then go into freefall from an absolute standstill... i can't wait to do a balloon jump if the feeling is the same.

although it was so awesome, i can't ever think of a time i wanted my canopy to open a bit faster lol

anyone else done one?

If you did this on your sport rig, are you a friggin idiot?
If you did it on a cutaway rig, that's cool.
As for the first statement, you've got a functional canopy over your head. Keep it that way. There are cases where reserves had problems and it's possibly that your's might have had one.
Stay safe and do the intentionals on a system designed for that.

no it was no my first time deploying into still air, remember i've had a cutaway before, sorry no beer for you.

we packed up the red and black manta, didn't really packa suprise, didn't really even pack it, just stuff it into the bag. it was interesting though, didn't stow the brakes, actually had the manta twist up on me and went into a dive as i tried to kick out of the line twist. got it untwisted, faced into the wind, got to the right spot then CHINK!!! built up a bit of speed then deployed the main, your firebolt btw, thing opens REALLY slow when you're sub sub sub terminal, kinda wished it had opened a bit faster

it was a blast though

come out next weekend, just be sure you don't pack it with the slider down please, i'd like somewhat of a soft opening.

you an give me a diving line twist to try to get out of again, good practice for me if it ever happens. they're so much fun, hopefully we get a bit more altitude next time and i can freefall longer

Hey Chris, what's up? Yeah, that sounds like it was a blast! Whose rig is that anyway?

I'm not sure if you've seen the video, but a few years ago [enter alumni member name here] jumped the cutaway rig. There's a great shot of [enter alumni member name here] slipping and falling off the step at altitude, it freakin' hilarious! We've got the video captured here in KC...it would make for a very nice blooper reel.

Anyone know how much it costs to do an intentional cutaway?

Contact your DZO and see if they can acquire one of the cutaway rigs from one of the manufacturers. They probably won't charge you at all and the DZO can use it as a draw to get some people out to jump to practice emergency procedures and such.

I did one before I ever had an emergency cutaway. Jumped an unmodified round. Chopped it at 3000. It was hella fun. Balloon jumps offer a similar feeling, but they are way better. Of course BASE is even more intense.

Yes fun police, I did use a 3 parachute system. Though I would have no problem doing it on a two parachute system as long as I packed the reserve.

About 50 of them;)

Derek

OK, Derek......some credit for you!

I have seen Derek cut away his 3rd canopy, deploy his main, fly around the canopy he just cut away until just the right instant, catch it with his feet at about 800ft(I think), and land directly on the target in front of the hanger! Pretty cool and it even impressed ole' Scotty Carbone!B|
