Slider issue

Recommended Posts

Jumped my rig for the first time yesterday, and had an issue with the slider. It slammed down past the slinks and jammed over the toggles. I struggled a little to push it up to free the toggles. After that, it was smooth sailing. I should probably mention that the main had previously been installed on full-width risers by means of hard links, but it is now installed on mini risers with slinks.

So, what should I do? I understand that a lot of jumpers pull the slider even further down, and stow it behind their neck. I assume that you need to pull it all the way down past the toggles and brake line stows. But this has to be done prior to releasing the toggles/brakes i.e. prior to having full control of the canopy, right? If that's the case I don't want to go that route.

So then, slider stops on the risers? What kind of stops are going to keep those huge slider grommets from passing the slinks?
I believe you have my stapler.

PD used to ship Slinks with black covers (they look like little "hats") made out of binding tape. They were built with the idea that you were not planning on pulling your slider over your risers and keep the grommets on the lines. If you're using somebody else's product or your Slinks didn't come with them, you could probably call them and order some or have your rigger make you a set.

In checking their website and checking at paragear it doesn't look like they send them as a course of habit anymore. I would see if your rigger can get/build them.

Thanks. I just checked out the "Riser Covers" on the PD website, and that looks like what I want.

But am I right that if you are going to stow the slider behind your neck (not use the riser covers), you need to do that prior to releasing toggles?

Pulling the slider behind your head should be by choice, not because it just 'goes there' by itself. You're right that you need to pull it down fully past the toggles before you unstow them, but this should only be done after you collapse the slider and if you have a way to hold the slider down once it's there. The problem is that if it comes back up, it can only make it as far as the guide ring for the steering line, at which point it stops there, blocking your rearward vision.

My adivce is to install the skink bumpers designed for keeping the slider off the risers, and just leave it up there. You should have gotten a set of the bumpers with your slinks, but if not, PM me your address and I'll send you a set. I got a fresh set of slinks with my reline, and since I do pull my slider down over the risers, I don't need them.

You may be able to install them on your own, just make sure you fully understand the correct way to do/undo the slinks, and have a rigger or more experienced jumper check both the slink attachment and that your lines are still striahg before jumping the canopy again. If you don't want to tackle it on your own, someone familair with slinks should be able to install them in less than 20 min.

Thanks Dave,

Yeah, I wouldn't try stowing behind my neck without the required retention. I'm just trying to understand how this all works. It seems to me, that another requirement for stowing the slider, is that you can do an efficient rear riser turn with the brakes stowed, something that I wasn't able to do. (The rear tension was just too high). You need to be able to quickly avoid a collision before stowing the slider and taking toggle control.

The slinks I have came off a different rig, which didn't have bumpers ("covers"). I installed the main myself, and have full understanding of the slink installation, what with all the practice I got before I finally got the lines straight.:P

Great, Dave. I'll take you up on your bumper offer!B|
