I just got a phone call over this coin. I was told by this collector that he couldn't tell one way or another from just the picture. He said it's probably a "fake or token coin" The indian head wasn't introduced on the dollar coin until 1858-9 before then it was a Liberty head with a type of headress. I saw the same thing in pictures and descriptions on different websites.. He did say, if you really want a serious answer, to look up a credited coin dealer / collector in your area and let them take a good look at it in person.
His website http://www.usrarecoininvestments.com/ Tom Pilitowski was the gentlemans name.
I searched yesterday just as a kind of quest. I really got nowhere. I looked at countless pictures and never once saw one that looked like this completely. Now I did see a number of coins similiar in design. They weren't dollar coins. There were also a number of coins you could "combine" to make this coin. (did that make sense?) Take the head from a penny, the back from a nickle, the date and dollar from a dollar.. etc.. etc.. You get my drift..
Sorry I couldn't have been more help. I think just hang onto it and check it out when you can.

LOL

Doesn't the US mint examine and authenticate coins?
Only thing about the US mint is if the coin turns out to be fake, you'll get a call from the Secret Service telling you that your coin about to be made into a ashtray

QuoteThank you for the inquiry. The coin you have is not a U.S. Mint issue rather a private mint issue
that uses design elements from a number of U.S. coins like the Indian Head Cent. Currently this
piece has no numismatic value.
