Hypothetically Speaking

Recommended Posts

Picture, if you will, the following scenario and tell me what your gut reaction would be:
You just finished an incredible jump; you remove your helmet and set it down next to your gear that you will shortly be packing, and begin to talk with the other jumpers on that dive.

You turn around after a few minutes and your helmet (with brand-new Pro-Dytter), altimeter and goggles are nowhere to be seen; loud, vocal queries turn up nothing but concerned input from people you know, and total lack of interest from two people you have never seen at your DZ before.

After searching for fifteen minutes, pulling your back hair out (I shave my head to prevent the pain of ripping my hair from my scalp) thinking you must be losing what little remains of your mind, you begin to search places that your helmet and other items could NEVER be (under the tarp you pack on, bottom of the porta-potties) and become even more vocal in your concerns.

Finally, pushed to the limit by the mysterious and total disappearance of your property, you begin to do the unthinkable: search under and around the items of people packing near you, only to discover that the two people you've never seen at your DZ before have decided to use your property without your permission or knowledge to hold down a canopy, and that canopy has been arranged to partially cover your equipment.

Is nigh-murderous mayhem justified?

If I was a fighting man I would probably tore them a couple new ones. Then again I'm not a fighting person. Whomever they are would have been run off the DZ in a matter of minutes. That is completely uncalled for behavior.

My reaction?

"Hey dude, c'mere a sec. I'm Rebecca. What's your name? OK, dude. If you ever again touch any of my stuff, or anyone else's stuff without EXPRESSED permission, I will make sure you physically cannot jump for a very long time. For now, I'm going to tell the DZO and every other regular jumper here that you and anyone you bring with you cannot be trusted. Are we clear? Good."

Fuckers. Those bowling balls are rolling around the packing area for a reason. >:(

Personally, I would have found/noticed it, and then not said a word. Just quietly watched. It's almost obvious that it was about to go bye bye, and just as it walked out of the packing area towards a vehicle, violence would have begun. But, ya know, that's just my opinion.

I agree with the first two replies...

The best resonse is a calm one, though. Remember when they were doing experiments on criminals, making them go to the people they had wronged and appologize? Most said they would have preferred jail time. If you are mean to them, they just think that you are a dick and that their actions aren't that bad because they figure you had it coming to you.

See, in this "hypothetical" situation, it was made clear that the missing gear had been appropriated without permission and it was expressed to all present who had done the appropriating. Not in an overly obnoxious or loud manner, but in such a way as to make the two unknowns aware that they were being watched from then on.

It's sad too, because I'm so trusting of everyone at our DZ, whether I've met them before or not. This little stunt has made me more conscious of that less-than-honorable element that exists in our world no less than the whuffo world.

:$ Oh my. Thanks! :$

I agree with remaining very calm, and using a low tone of voice, but being unequivocal and absolutely sincere about future consequences.

I am actually NOT a violent person (not in action, anyway.) But when it comes to the gear I have spent a LOT of money on that I rely on to help me save my life...

See, that's the route I was planning on going, save for two reasons:
1) My sweetheart implored me to calm down and let it go (I can't resist her)
and
2)The DZO seemed to know these two kids, one guy, one girl (the girl actually having been the one to make the snag), so I decided to let it drop.

As long as my gear was back, I was willing to be somewhat magnanimous in my mercy. The NEXT time (I'm stupid enough to turn my back on my gear for more than two seconds), I'm crackin' skulls. >:(

Hmmm..using someones gear to aid in packing...if there packing..then they have been around a DZ before and should know not to touch other ppl's gear without permission...sounds awful fishy to me...I'd keep a eye on them and advise everyone else to do so also.

Bizzactly. I don't care if you ARE the DZO, you better not be getting proprietary with anyone else's gear unless they OK'd it.

NONONONO! In this "hypothetical" situation, it wasn't the DZO who did the snatching. Not by a LONG shot. He and his wife are like family to me, and they aren't the kind of people who would create problems like that.

The next step in this little scenario is to go ask the DZO if he knew those two and how well he knew them, before letting him know they were a bit free with my gear.

I have to agree with the Rev. on this one. Once you locate your missing gear, sit back and watch. See what's going to happen next. Bust them with the goods in their hot little hands. Then they would have been kicked off the DZ for sure, and then you wouldn't have to worry about watching them the next time there out there.
But since it didn't go that way, I'd be sure to let every one within ear shot hear you say, "Hey, watch those guys over there, they have been know to "borrow" gear without permission of the owners."

Man, that SUCKS! Not everyone can keep their eyes on their gear every second. You need to make the DZO aware of exactly what happened, let him know how uncomfortable this made you. Maybe he'll at least talk to them, at best ask them not to come back.

Angela.

Solid and sane advice. Thank you. And next time, I'll be sure to let things run their course after quietly letting a few people know what's going on.

This was the best advice I saw. Plus there's never a sacrificial lamb or person around when you really need to make a sacrifice to the sky gods...

Hmmm, sacrificial lambs you say? The girlie was not so well endowed, or we could have had Ivan over for some RACK OF LAMB. :D
