Movie review: The Matrix - Revolutions

for sheer entertainment it was a blast.

I agree, but for the final chapter to a trilogy of that hype and magnitude it was a let down. I am going to go see it again though to catch the parts I missed. I loved the battle scenes though...

Let me say this, I thought the first one was a good popcorn flick and should of been left at that. It could of been an excellent film, if just left alone. Then Reloaded came out , and a lot of people, including myself was extremely dissapointed. It was pretenious, boring and all around a diaster. It lost everything the first one had. After that, I had little interest in see'ing the series progress, but I had to see how it ended. Here comes Revolution's... What can I say? It is not near as good as the original Matrix, but it's better than Reloaded - which isn't saying a lot. Most of the film (70% ) doesn't take place in the Matrix, which takes quite abit away from it. The CG is still weak (most notably the machines ripped from Aliens). The acting is still alittle-bit out there , but it somehow seems better than Reloaded. All in all, I didn't enjoy it much, until the end. I loved the Neo Vs Smith fight near the end. It made me want the Washowsi (or however you spell it) direct a new Superman film. They have the flying, the fighting and everything down pat. With all that said, I still don't think this was a fitting way to end the trilogy. Then again, a series like this, that had a great start, medicore middle is bound to dissapoint in the end. There was no clear cut way to end this, and maybe that is why they shouldn't of bothered with the sequels , in my opinion.

And with that said, am I the only one who felt after watching Revolutions, that it seemed like the second one was entirely unnessarcy for the most part? I sat through the second one, all through the pretenious dialouge, the zillion questions it posed and by the end of the third - most of them was either forgotten or truly just void. All the second one seemed to do was interduce 'Kid', 'Serph' (Orcale's Bodyguard), 'The Architech' and 'Merv' (French man). It seems as though Reloaded was nothing but filler, where as the real story started with original and picked back up in Revolutions.

Also , I think it is safe to say they hinted towards a sequel at the end of this one. Will it happen? I don't know. I have to say I doubt it. The series has received a fair amount of backlash since Reloaded came out and now Revolutions, and the only true reason Revolutions is goin' to bring in the money is so people know how it "ends" and that is what WB is banking on. I doubt people will really care if Neo or the gang come back in a few years for another installment. I know I won't

It was quite a spectacle, but as has been mentioned elsewhere in this thread, the first feature was so groundbreaking that it was a pretty tough act to follow. It was so hip, so different, and was such a radical version of an old concept that it was very fresh and new.

Unfortunately the concept is getting pretty stale now. "Loud and busy" was the impression I came away with.

Harju's advice - save your money and wait for the DVD.

However, the animated collection called "Enter the Matrix" is NOT to be missed!

I saw it today and it didn't really do much for me. It's all special effects and 1/2 hour long fight scenes. Some of the people I work with and who saw it with me loved it. But they're computer geeks who live their lives through computers and sci-fi movies. So who are you going to trust? Me or them? How about yourselves? Go see it and make your own opinions maybe?

I didn't mind that most of the movie wasn't in the Matrix, I did mind that it didn't focus on the questions it brought to light in the 2nd movie. While it was a typical "B-movie/Hero" flick with big effects, it was also about the human condition - the need, desire to survive despite the odds.....something that almost any sci-fi movie delves into (which is the only way I can justify that waste of time Rave scene).

I hated that there was no story in the third movie - it seems like they took all the story for the entire Trilogy and gave it to the architect at the end of #2. They hinted that Zion may still be fake by what Morpheus says, they hinted at a lot of things but never answered anything.....which is very typical of Anime.

I hated the fact that I needed to see the Animatrix and Enter the Matrix to get a better idea of what happened (Did you know Sati's parents are the one that betrayed the Oracle, and the Oracle's choice delt with the fact that Sati will help bring together both worlds?) They introduced too much in the 2nd movie and did nothing with it, which makes you wonder how much was planned out and how much had to change as this movie caused companies to go bankrupt.

Somehow I wonder how much of what the W Brothers wanted to do was tainted by Hollywood and Joel Silver? When they pitched the Trilogy to WB, did they force them to put most of the story into the first one in case they never made the other two (much like Babylon 5 had to put all of the story into Season 4 in case they were canceled - then when Season 5 was approved they had almost no story left?)

Did anyone catch the BLANTANT Jesus crucifiction reference at the end of the movie? As a reminder the voice (Deus Ex Machina according to the credits) says "It is done" (which is what Jesus says in the Bible when he is upon the cross) fullfulling the prophecy that The One needed to die to save mankind (remember that Neo in the 2nd movie said "it felt like death"). Neo went back to the source most likely - just like the One was supposed to, and he is probably in the machine now.

More stories after this? It is possible. The W Brothers hinted that was a story to be told after this story, but it's main character would revolve around a "Neo type character" and we may see some of the original characters in that story, however they were not sure they wanted to tell those stories via books, movies, comics, etc. It would most likely focus on "the kid" IMO - if you saw the Animatrix you would understand why.

I will see it one more time in the theatre - in IMAX just to see that Zion battle and rain battle again. The music in the rain battle was fantastic!

I wasn't a fan of the second one. Figured the 3rd would only get worse. I just didn't get it. If he could fly, why didnt he just fly all the freaking time? He waited till he was about to die every time. What an idiot. And if I could fly in the matrix, do you really think I'd be trying to shut the damn thing down? I'd never leave!

Dude, this was the big discussion I had with my whuffo wannabe intellectuals. They'd be "but oh you'd be like Cypher, living a lie"

So F'Cking What! I'd be skydiving every day with no need for a ride up.

"It'd be a hollow life"

And your Real Lives are more fulfilling?

We even had an argument over it, which is cool.

I say Matrix shouldda stopped after film 1.

# 2 was disappointing. i don't know if any of you know these cheap spaghetti-westerns from italy where the good guys do neverending fist-fights with their enemies - well thats what came to my mind during that part [:/]

for revolutions: what a crap! never-neverending shoot-outs. more than cheesy dialogs and soap stuff. all the crap about a last minute save. neo being blinded and having visions (ok, they stole that one from greek mythology:S) and the end of the movie cries for yet another sequel - i'll take bets on that

for me it's just a high tech version of "tron" beefed up with tons of action and mythological & philosophical mumbojumbo:S

I might rent the 3rd. Maybe.

But the 1st was good, and the 2nd was a big pile of shit (special effects were nice enough). It was like it was written by a couple high school kids fully brainwashed by the hollywood cliche crowd. The were kissing up to the sterotypes everywhere - pretentious, self congratulatory, mental masturbatory, tripe, lecturing pile of pooh (hee hee hee, he said 'pooh').

But the previews of the 3rd don't looke too bad, maybe there will be some good effects again. I'm waiting for the LOTR's third. That'll be a huge day.

I was pondering eventually buying the Matrix trilogy DVD based on how the 3rd one was (I only have the 1st), and considering some of the reviews, I dont even know if I want to spend $25 to see it at the theather...

But LOTR, thats not even a consideration..... does anyone know when the director's cut DVD of the 2 towers will be out ?

The whole having to watch AniMatrix and play 'Enter the Matrix' is nothing more than a gimmick to milk more money out of the franchise and I bought into the Animatrix one (I like anime - sue me), but I will not play a half-assed game, simply because the developers / WB decided that to sell the game, they had to leave crucial storypoints out of the actual movie and throw them into the game..No Sir'ee.

As for the DVD's, I will buy Revolutions, just like I did 'The Matrix', 'Animatrix' and 'Reloaded. Why? Because I collect DVD's and once I start a series, I finish it, even if I don't enjoy all the installments.

Speaking of DVD's, does anyone else find it awful odd that all the DVD releases have been somewhat lacking on special features? Seems like yet another way to milk the franchise once all the first DVD releases are out of each film. You know there has to be a shitload of extra footage / commentarys / etc possible.

Well, I read through all the replies and there is only one thing that I don't remember anyone saying here... which is this:

Thanks Ivan. :)
I do appreciate you (and all the others who relied here) giving a summary of the movie. I was already hesitant about going to see it after the 2nd one, but now I know I can just wait for one of my friends to get it on DVD later and I can see it then. Otherwise, I am saving my money for LotR - Return of the King. B|

Yeah, it's fine, we'll walk down the line. Leave our rain, a cold trade for warm sunshine
You my friend, I will defend... and if we change, well, I love you anyway

i think most people expected too much out of Revolutions. For what it was, i thought it was a GREAT movie. of course, i might have been a little happier if they had just done the zion battle, the neo/smith battle, and ended it. none of the talking or "drama" in between. But damn i loved those mechs, especially the shot of the mechs all shootin up at that hole in the roof of zion. Made for a hella cool shot. Did anybody see the preview for Troy? That looks like that should be interesting (especially for me, being a greek mythology buff) but like everybody else i'm waiting somewhat impatiently for LOTR to come out.

Revolutions fucking rocked!

No plot you say? No shit! That's because the plot is in Reloaded, Revolutions is a "wrap up" movie, not a stand-alone movie.

Stupid movie physic: Well, shit, it IS Sci-Fi...but that's ok, go back to work arguing how transporters work...wait, they don't, but I thought everything in Star Trek was real.

Here's the AggieDave view: its a good movie, worth the $7 to go see it. Infact, I'm going to go watch it again next week. Sure, wait for the DVD, but honestly, I think if you don't see it on a large screen, you'll wish you would have.

Oh, secondary review:

I watched it at an IMAX. Talk about cool! Too bad its not out on DLP or I would have driven to Plano for that...DLP knocks the shit out of any other format out there right now!
