Good news...No surgery (for now!)

Recommended Posts

I hurt my knee during AFF on a crap landing in September and the MRI showed a complete tear of the ACL, tear of the medial meniscus, and bone contusions on my femur. I've been doing pretty well on the knee with some discomfort that usually gets worse when I hyperextend or rotate.

So, I had the MRI follow up with my doctor this morning and she recommended two months of prolotherapy where they inject a dextrose solution into my knee once a week. It's supposed to help regenerate fibers of the acl and meniscus, but is a bit less succesful on a complete versus partial tear. And they're going to fit me for some brace with metal bars or something (I'll be likely to wear that next to never :S).

Anyway, the good news is...no surgery for now! They'll do another MRI in two months to see if the prolotherapy is working. If it isn't...well, then [:/]...hmmm, actually...it'll work! It will, so I don't have to be grounded. I hope! B|

no surgery = good surgery. just a few months out of my second on a second part. Dr give me 10 years till total replacement of my ankle (if I dont run). Sorry doc, my wing loading is a bit high. so I exercise (non-impact) and do my best to take care of it.

I totalled my motorcycle on july 4th and destroyed every ligament in my right knee. Had surgery July 14th (I had to have surgery because my lower leg was basically just hanging there with no ligament support). Surgery sucked, recovery sucked and I am still grounded.

My advice to you is...Have the surgery. If you dont you will regret it and there is a good chance you will do more damage. If you have the surgery you will baby your knee for 6 months to a year, if you dont have it you will have to baby it for a lifetime.

trust me, I speak from experience...have the surgery and get it overwith.

I will agree with funks. I partially tore my ACL in 1992 and never had it repaired. I decided not to have it repaired, and now it's getting arthritic. It's still stable, and I can exercise and such on it. Nevertheless, the continuing problems I have now could have been averted with a more aggresive approach earlier on.

A complete tear of the ACL is no joke. I hope that this dextrose therapy works, but it doesn't sound like it will give any long lasting stability.

Something else to consider if you have the surgery which not all doctors will tell you about...you have the choice to use a cadavers parts or your own parts...pros and cons of each...

Cadavers:

Pros - Quicker recovery, not as painful
Cons - Not as strong when repaired, chance for infection or disease

Your own Parts:

Pros - Much stronger repair, No chance for disease or infection

Cons - Longer recovery period (they had to break my kneecap and pieces off of my shin to use my own parts for the repair), Beginning part of recovery is excruciatingly painful.

Once again, I recommend you do it and use pieces of your own ligaments. You will thank yourself years down the road.
