piisfish 140 #1 April 16, 2011 what would be the max weight + speed limits for such canopy ? (I don't have my Poynter's books with me ) I have a pilot who gave me 2 Softie seats to pack with C9's inside, and he would prefer to fly his Yak 9 with his other rigs, which are Nationals with FFE 24' Preserve1 canopies. My first impression is that he would be better with the diapered C9's, which by memory would be "more resistant" at higher speeds (200-300kts) Would be thankful if anyone could give me some help and pointers scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM
pchapman 279 #2 April 17, 2011 Poynters I just says "damage area" from 400 kts on up, and lists opening forces for 100 to 400 kts, topping out at 5400 lbs. Those C-9's always looked pretty solid. Edit: Of course at high speed a jumper decelerates pretty fast, so just a couple sec delay brings the speed down a lot. But if you really gotta pull right away... JerryBaumchen 1,466 #3 April 17, 2011 Hi Nic, TSO C23b lists the weight & speed chart for the Strength Tests using a C-9. We used one and it was 400 lbs @ 200 MPH. No damage. JerryBaumchen
riggerrob 643 #4 April 17, 2011 He would be far better off with C-9s in his Yak.
riggerrob 643 #5 April 17, 2011 This is the first time I have ever heard of installing Preserves in National PEPs. Not even sure if that is legit ... given the difference in diapers???

Andy9o8 2 #7 April 17, 2011 I used to have one that deployed without a malfunction every time while spinning on my back, with the lines coming up thru my legs. Which was kinda often for a while. Damn reliable canopies.
JerryBaumchen 1,466 #8 April 17, 2011 Hi Rob, http://www.nationalparachute.com/page15.html I 'understand' that National uses Preserves in their Premium series. I have 'heard' that National is no longer doing the actual building of anything; that is is all sub'd out. But I do not KNOW that!!!!!! It seems as though they are no longer in Flemington, NJ: P.O. pchapman 279 #12 April 18, 2011 On the National Parachute side conversation: Following up what Jerry B heard, I checked with National and they said: QuoteThe Preserve I is used in our NATIONAL FLAT. Our Premium 360 / 425 / 490 parachutes will have the Phantom AeroStar canopy (24 ft / 26 ft / 28ft). The Preserve I is rated at 225 lbs. which puts it in between the N-425 and N-490. piisfish 140 #14 April 18, 2011 The preserves are indeed in flat nationals. They were factory assembled and packed. I was the first to repack them. 4 years later scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM
mjosparky 4 #15 April 18, 2011 QuoteActually I ment, What was being used in the c-9 test shown? Lee The 400 lb was a system we were developing for Scripps to deploy oceanographic buoys. The one other one was when we were working on converting the F-18 head box over to a C-9 with a bunch of mods. Here is a picture of a system we developed for Scripps using the C-9. It was only about 110 pounds. Box 245 Palenville, NY 12463 USA JerryBaumchen I don't know how they've rearranged themselves but they are definately still in NJ. The NY addy might be a PO Box just to establish residency, as they formed a domestic (NY) corporation last October. Their customer service and ordering are in NJ but everything is being shipped from (manufactured in?) CA. Just not sure what all that means."Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity."
