From the Cambridge International Dictionary of English:

resolution (SOLUTION)
[Show phonetics]
noun [C/U]
the act of solving a problem or finding a way to improve a difficult situation

resolve (SOLVE) [Show phonetics]
verb [T]
to solve or end a problem or difficulty:

Resolution IS the noun for the verb 'Resolve'.

You resolve something with a resolution.

I normally don't pick at the 'little details' of a speech like that... but the quote I used to name the thread is what he's saying about letting the US deal with sh*t instead of the UN... because the UN uses 'resolutions' and Bush uses 'resolve'.

It irked me a little

Nothing like the government to supply its citizens with a generous helping of ambiguity. Why even bother making a distinction between resolutions and resolve when they so clearly share meanings? :S

The only explanation I can come up with is this:
Perhaps resolutions meant an actual expression of desire to meet said dangers while resolve referred to a firm plan or decision to enable these resolutions.

He'd have been better off just saying "we need to meet dangers...yada, yada, yada" and let us draw our own conclusions! :P

I think resolve can be a noun too, but don't quote me on that. I've used it this way too, like "his resolve never wavered" or something like that. If this is wrong feel free to call me a muppet! :$

Actually Sam, you're right.

Here is a part of the 'resolve' definition found at infoplease.com:

—n.
1. a resolution or determination made, as to follow some course of action.

I think he was trying to set up a contrast between the UN, which passes "resolutions" that have no teeth, and the US, which has the "resolve" to stick with a plan when things are not going well.

Most resolutions begin with the word "Resolved".

Allow TheAnvil to expand your vocabulary a bit:

http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary

Please note definition #4. This is the context in which Mr. Bush used the word 'resolution'.

See http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=resolve 4a &4b.

Now that you've expanded your vocabulary a bit - you don't have to thank me, it's my pleasure - re-read Mr. Bush's quote. I find his statement well worded and correct.

Harsh.

Anyway, uhm, Anvil, your first link is to a page blank safe for: "No arguments in request."

I still don't feel as though the muppet has ever properly explained himself.

I don't think the muppets speech writers have ever chosen the correct words for him to properly explain himself.

And I still don't feel as though your definitions really shed any new light on the fact that the man clearly does not know what his going to say to a crowd until he steps up to the podium and starts readin' the cue cards. :)
But thank you, ever so much, for the vocabulary lesson ;)

Of course you do, but Wesley Clarks comments last week were racist, right? I never thought that partisanship would infiltrate the grammar police ;)

I called Weasley Clark prejudiced against southerners - not a racist. I still think that. Could I classify him as a racist? I dunno. Just checked his website and a cursory perusal doesn't show his opinions on the racial discriminatory programs touted by the left. That's a strong point against him being a racist in and of itself, but doesn't preclude it. I don't think he's a racist, but that's just based on my own knowledge of the man.

Goose - get real. Sir Frost just went on O'Reilly last night stating how well Mr. Bush answered his unrehearsed questions.

Boortz had some good comments today RE European hatred of GWB. http://boortz.com// Goto his program notes for today. Quite interesting.
