lawrocket 3 #1 November 19, 2003 Hey, folks. I'm getting clobbered left and right with phishes coming apparently from Pay Pal. If you get one of these, DO NOT OPEN IT! I've learned the hard way that not only does it attempt to defraud, but it is also a worm that will propagate to all users. On top of that, it's left my computer "pre-crash looking" Again, DO NOT OPEN the PayPal e-mail! Both of my e-mail accounts are getting hit. Mtoherfucker hackers. My wife is hotter than your wife. Snowbird 0 #3 November 19, 2003 It's come at me a few times, but my virus checker catches the worm. I'm choked. Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea. -Robert A. Heinlein

McDuck 0 #5 November 19, 2003 Funny, I just mentioned to the staff here that, after our latest DOS attack, that hackers that perpetrate this kind of crap need to have their balls twisted off and fed to them on live television.Kevin - Sonic Beef #5 - OrFun #28 "I never take myself too seriously, 'cuz everybody know fat birds don't fly." - FLC Online communities: proof that people never mature much past high school. aero04 0 #6 November 19, 2003 I got that email too through my school email system. I believe that is the first spam I've gotten on that address in 3 years. PS. I have no beer for this first. Don't ask.
Michele 1 #7 November 19, 2003 See, I figured that out when I got a notice about my PayPal account...and I don't have a PayPal account....not only that, but I suspect there is also an "Earthlink" similar scam... I've seen some of the headers, and there are wee clues to get it past the scanner, such as "OfficiaI"..."Earthlink.com", etc. I've gotten these requests to verify my account and credit card number several times in one day - that's not how business is done.... Anyway, just an FYI to all earthlink.net folks out there that this MAY be a similar thing.... jceman 1 #8 November 19, 2003 QuoteI had a problem with paypal myself. I will never even think of using it. You may have had problems with PayPal, but this is not from PayPal and has nothing to do with them. What's worse it these scammers use pages that look like legitimate PayPal pages to dupe the gullible; if you look at the link in the emails, you'll notice that the URL begins with a numeric address rather than a true PayPal address. It has more to do with gullible people who open and respond to emails asking for personal info, just like people who fall for phone calls from "the bank" telling them that there is a problem with their account and asking for their account number/PIN, etc. I don't know who deserves to be laughed at more, the scammers, or the folks that actually fall for the scams. Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money. Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?
Pammi 0 #9 November 19, 2003 It's just the current virus, not actually Paypal. I got an email about it this morning, see here Pammi
Jib 0 #10 November 19, 2003 I posted about it a while ago. Lately, they've been sending .gif or .jpg files and when you click on any part of the page, you go off to their fraudulent website. -------------------------------------------------- the depth of his depravity sickens me. -- Jerry Falwell, People v. Scrumpot 1 #11 November 19, 2003 Same shit going on with several other "high profile spoofs" lately too. A very legitimate looking (for instance) request to update your e-bay profile, stating that your bidding privileges have been suspended is another one of them. They even copy DIRECTLY off the legitimate site, and provide the LEGITIMATE "privacy disclosure" links and graphics etc., but if you click on the "update my info now" link (in the e-mail) it instead BLIND REDIRECTS you to an off-shore based "mirror" site that is instead CULTIVATING YOUR PERSONAL (including credit card, ss# and bank) DATA, if you give it to 'em!! Simple rule.... ALWAYS be "heads-up" people, and VERIFY before your ever "volunteer" your personal financial data ...EVER! ---And almost NEVER, if YOU did not initiate the transaction. These SCUZ-BAGS are getting really, really "good" lately it seems. Blue Skies, -Grantcoitus non circum - Moab Stone

mikkey 0 #14 November 20, 2003 Just as a caution regarding related scams. We had a number scams in Australia targeting Internet Banking customers. One scam was an e-mail disguised as being from your bank directing you to a fake copy of the Internet Bank web site asking you to re-enter your ID and Password. Another scam is an e-mail from the fake internet bank (technical support) telling you that they have a problem and need you details. I have not heard how bad this type of fraud has been in other countries. I received one of those e-mails myself and it looked quite professional. A gullible person could easily be sucked in....--------------------------------------------------------- When people look like ants - pull. When ants look like people - pray.
