dbattman 0 #1 November 20, 2003 OK- now let's hear what the Brits among us feel about the latest incident. Stay or go?

nacmacfeegle 0 #6 November 20, 2003 I don't think that us Brits are in the slightest bit put off by bombings....look at our resolve to stay in NI for example. Don't get me wrong, we shouldn't be in Iraq, but now that we are, we are there for the long term. Terrorists can bomb whatever they like, and they have done in the past, it won't make one bit of difference. I can't see ANY government giving in to a bombing campaign, whether at home or in ferrin places. If anything, this sort of action will typically strengthen the resolve of our govt to root out the perps.-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. kiltboy 0 #7 November 20, 2003 I'm not 100% sure. Certainly the bombings where the result of militant islamic terrorists but they happened in Turkey so should the UK leave Turkey? Cyprus where the UK are part of a UN peace keeping force between Greece and Turkey? Bosnia where there was ethnic cleansing of muslims during the civil war (could also extended into Kosovo as they are neighbours). Afghanistan where Al-Queda were based and where there are still Taliban and Al-Queda fighters being hunted by UK forces? Iraq which would become a bigger mess if we left now? Can't quite pin down why I mentioned Sierra Leone but I was on a roll so I included it. I'm guessing you were referring to Iraq but no the UK won't leave because of the explosions today. There will be a review of security but The UK is a very aware society as far as terrorism goes (probably second to Israel in that respect) and you don't give in to terrorism. Michele 1 #8 November 20, 2003 The bombings today were likely a "message". Think about selection of targets - british consul, and the bank. Where did it take place? In a muslim country which supports the Iraq war (at least marginally - there was that whole thing about troops and whatnot...). Think about the timing: while Bush is meeting with Blair. Yes, imho, it's a message. But I am curious where the upset was when 25 Jews were killed last Saturday during similar bombings at synagogue in an almost identical attack? No, the Brits won't leave. The Americans won't leave. And the Turks may react in a manner similar to the Saudis who have all of a sudden decided to double think this terrorism thing, and see what they can do to get it cleaned up. I just hope the Turks are more serious than the Saudis are. Ciels- Michele ~Do Angels keep the dreams we seek While our hearts lie bleeding?~
TheAnvil 0 #9 November 20, 2003 I think the Brits will stay - they're pretty tough lot. I think Al Quaida is screwing up though. By attacking targets in Muslim nations they show the general Muslim populace what they are all about. Not good for them. This gives Muslim nations more incentive to go after them as well.Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!! kiltboy 0 #10 November 20, 2003 I know they were trying to send a message and neither the target nor the timing were overlooked. The thing is that the terrorists carrying out this type of attack do not realise that they will not achieve their desired goal. The synagogue bombings are an interesting point and it brings up the usual religious fanaticism/hatred common in terrorist groups. It is disappointing that those bombings did not receive the same revulsion and condemnation. David
