Had an interesting jump yesterday....

Recommended Posts

Jumped for the first time in 3 months yesterday.. All we got was a 2000 feet hop-n-pop..

I normally have a rule.. I don't get out below 2.5k.. But I foolishly did.. I hadn't jumped in 3 months and I had just drove 113 miles to the dz.. I was bullheaded..

I got out on the step of the cessna, exited into the relative wind and dumped.. waited.. waited... waited.. .. . looked up to see a bag lock. Only a couple seconds had gone by. Nicely opened pilot chute, line stretch.. Just didn't have enough airspeed to get the damned thing open.. Reached for my cutaway.. paused, reached up and tuged on the risers.. Canopy opened straight and on heading.. You see.. I normally double stow the last 2 rubberbands for easier openings..

I had an open canopy at about 900 feet, +- 100 feet...

#1.. I should have followed my rule of 2.5k..
#2.. I shouldn't have jumped the pack job knowing I packed it to open slow.
#3.. In retrospect... I should have cut that fucker without hesitation..

I am kind of beating myself up about the whole thing.. Just seems like I was toying with the odds in an unfavorable way if you know what I mean..

I will honor my hard deck of 2.5k no matter what....

Just thought I would share in my dumb assness... Got enough of a rush out of that one for 15 jumps.. lol

Thanks for sharing the experience. I just recently started a thread on sub-terminal openings, but I never considered the possibility of a baglock due to double wraps. (never do them, so it didn't enter my mind) On that subject- how different is your opening if you don't double stow the last two rubber bands? Just curious.

I had something similar happen when i went to aggieland a while back. The only difference was we exited at 4k instead of 2k. I double the last two stows also and thought about what if i had been lower also. Glad you came out ok.

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

2000 is plently high to do a full twisting back gainer and still throw out on the main off the step of a 206... Or so I've been told :)

Rob, you given any thought to upsizing since you are'nt getting to the DZ much anymore?

As long as you don't otherwise get line dump, I'm not sure how double stowing affects anything (except the possibility of a baglock). If you do get line dump, I don't think double stowing is the best cure. Can you explain a bit more?

The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
