DTOXX 0 #1 November 24, 2003 I know, I know. BEER Short version: 1st night jump - tinted goggles on night jumps suck. Long Version: I was filling the extra slot on our 2 plane fleet of 182's all day. You know - tandems with video, AFF students no video, blah blah blah. I am manifested to go once again with an AFF student but was asked to wait one load and join 3 other experienced jumpers of whom I am the least experience. F'in A sure I say. Well this delay put us right up to the limit of sunlight and finally the DZ owner pulls out the strobe lights. With a puzzled look I state "Ummm, this is (long pause...thinking for way to say it) my time before my second night jump. While I know this will not save me from buing a case of beer I had to give it a shot. We board the plan, we get to 9K and I start my prejump check. Helmet - check, chest strap tightened - check, dark tinted goggles - oh F#%^... I put them on and look at my wrist. Damn thats one dark looking altimeter. It never really got that bad but I think it could have been worse. I pulled at 4500, as planned and instantly tore my goggles down to my chin. Mental note: helmets straps stop goggles from being pulled down to the neck. As I pulled the highest I was able to see the first two land but found myself amazed at the canopy of the 3rd jumper. Everytime her strobe went off the entire canopy would "pulse" with the light comming up through the canopy. It was really cool. I then set myself up for landing, tail lights to head lights as instructed prior to boarding. Then the best... With all my friends watching I drop right between the vehicles being used to illuminate the peas and did a picture perfect landing. Then there was beer. ------- D.T. Unstable 9 #3 November 24, 2003 I love night Jumps. I've got 3 of them so far - Why anybody would want to not require them for a D-license is just crazy if you ask me.=========Shaun ==========
