bluegremlin 0 #1 November 13, 2003 Iv perswaded 13 whuffos to jump for charity on the 1st of febuary, i actualy had more signed up to do it but most of them droped out. I have all 13 of there deposits paid to the skydive centre ( Peterlee ) so there all going through with the jump, there all really scared about it. i even had to trick a couple of them into signing up but thats another story. So how many do you think will keep jumping after they first touch the skys??? (Ohh its a static line jump by the way)

tinfoil 0 #3 November 13, 2003 I've heard that of the people who do a first jump course, 3-5% continue with the sport. So uh... round up... and I'd say maybe one person will continue. “- - Sumo is the greatest of sports. It has power, grace, speed and cluture. And most importantly, two fat bastards smacking the shit out of each other. ”
Luminous 0 #4 November 13, 2003 I vote 1 also. 13 in my 1st jump course. including me, 4 showed for level 2 then 3 of us showed for next 3/4 months. Then me and another guy, he stopped showing up when it got cold & I never saw him again. Bad Bug! 'In an insane society a sane person seems insane.' Stacy 0 #5 November 13, 2003 There were 7 in my ground school class. I still jump, I'm aware of one girl who I believe still jumps at SD Long Island and graduated AFF about 6 months after I did, two other guys jump very infrequently but did continue and graduate, got licensed/gear, etc. THe other three weren't even permitted to DO an AFF Jump. They couldn't pass the test in 3 tries and didn't really prove competent to jump alone. I think they did tandems and perhaps took up bowling. __
pilotdave 0 #6 November 13, 2003 I used to be president of a collegiate club. We did 4 trips to the DZ each semester for the newbies. You never can tell who will stick with it and who wont. I had tons of people tell me they were DEFINITELY going to take up skydiving after their first jump, then I'd never see them again. Others that didn't seem all that excited about it kept showing up over and over. I think you might get a couple that make a second or even third jump, but I'd doubt you'll get more than 1 or none that stick with it. When someone told me they were definitely coming back for more, I'd tell them to really try to remember how they feel right then, a few minutes after jumping. After a few weeks, after hearing how stupid and crazy they were from friends and family, a lot people forget that feeling and lose the desire to do it again. Out of curiosity, what are the details of the charity event? Dave
Aviatrr 0 #7 November 13, 2003 Since it's static line, I'd say one. If it were freefall, two or three. With S/L they won't get a real taste of what skydiving is all about....unless their one of the few that like the canopy flight better than freefall. I had 8 people in my FJC(IAD, similar to S/L) back in '96. Everybody was amazed to see that of those 8, 4 of us finished the progression and continue to jump for at least a couple hundred jumps. Two of those guys are dead now, both from botched hook turns. I was unfortunate enough to witness one of them. The other guy that finished with us quit jumping after the accident I witnessed(which was the second guy to be killed). As they say....if you're in this sport long enough, you'll either see somebody die or know somebody that does. Mike
WILDBILLAQR 0 #8 November 13, 2003 Out of our original group of about 30, 3 of us are licensedand jump almost every weekend! My old collegiate skydiving club just switched from training their students from primarily s/l to AFF. The club had a much better retention rate with s/l. The second jump only being $35 as opposed to almost $200 helped that one quite a bit. There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning
weekendwonder 0 #10 November 23, 2003 I think out of my 1st jump (AFF) class of 12 or so, I'm the only one who hung with it. Don't think my experience to be atypical, so I vote 1-2, max. Blues, Bob Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Lee03 0 #12 November 23, 2003 Of the 5 that I have gotten to jump.. 2 that did AFF jump one with me are saving money so they can do the rest of AFF.. 1 of the three that I talked into tandem jumps is saving money so he can start AFF and I haven't been able to talk to the other 2 yet.-------- To put your life in danger from time to time ... breeds a saneness in dealing with day-to-day trivialities. --Nevil Shute, Slide Rule

The ones with true guts are the ones who do it again and again, jump after jump. Just seems to me those kind of people are few and far between, even at a FJC.
