Subject: IDENTIFICATION OF EQUIPMENT SOLD TO LA COUNTY
Date: Tue, 18 Nov 2003 14:21:16 -0800
From: "Los Angeles County"

The County of Los Angeles actively promotes and is committed to ensure a work environment that is free from any discriminatory influence be it actual or perceived. As such, it is the County's expectation that our manufacturers, suppliers and contractors make a concentrated effort to ensure that any equipment, supplies or services that are provided to County departments do not possess or portray an image that may be construed as offensive or defamatory in nature.

One such recent example included the manufacturer's labeling of equipment where the words "Master/Slave" appeared to identify the primary and secondary sources. Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label.

We would request that each manufacturer, supplier and contractor review, identify and remove/change any identification or labeling of equipment or components thereof that could be interpreted as discriminatory or offensive in nature before such equipment is sold or otherwise provided to any County department.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and assistance.

Joe Sandoval, Division Manager
Purchasing and Contract Services
Internal Services Department
County of Los Angeles

I would have expected the bay area to be the first to come out with something this ridiculous, but im kinda glad socal gets the honors.

Uh oh! That's going to be a problem for us. We use the SPI bus, which not only has a master/slave architechture, but even has signals like SLAVE_SELECT and SLAVE_ATTN (attention.) How un-PC is that, suggesting that these poor integrated circuits are lesser chips than the master IC?

Come to think of it, one airplane I used to fly at a local FBO had a slaved gyro! I suppose they'll have to remove that.

Will we have to get rid of the USB bus? They use a master-slave architechture. Probably not; they use the more PC terms "host" and "device."

>I guess your car's brake systems will now have a "Dominant
>Cylinder"?

And a submissive cylinder? You could make the argument that hydraulic system components have every right to choose their own sexuality, and thus should be able to choose their own descriptions.

How about calling them "Bourgeois Pigs" and "Proletariat Freedom Fighters" instead of the respective "master" and "slave."

I'd be willing to file a section 1983 Civil Rights Action for the benefit of these downtrodden "Proletariat Freedom Fighters." All I need is a date of injury so that I can comply with applicable claims statutes.

Oh boy,

Now we have to give rights to computers?
Next they will have computer psychologists, and send thier HD's to finishing schools.
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama

Hydraulic cylinders do not choose their sexuality, they are created with it. ;)

I think they have special mechanics in high priced garages now that can do the change;)
