quade 4 #3 November 24, 2003 Saw it in Digital Light Projection. Flawless. Fantastic cinematography. Fantastic story. Fantastic special effects. I -HIGHLY- recommend it and I do that very infrequently. I'm a total movie snob. A LOT of folks were turned off when they found out that Kill Bill - Vol 1 was a two part movie, but I'm thinking the Vol 1 part was kind of a tip off. Ok, so let me tip you off, Master and Commander is also a multi-part movie and does NOT come to a full and complete stop at the end. It was clearly created from frame 1 to be a multi-part series of films. However, do not let that deter you from seeing this incredible film -- just know it ahead of time and don't be surprised. Just be glad there's more to come.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

JamesNahikian 0 #5 November 24, 2003 I saw it last night and would echo Paul's comments for the most part. FWIW, the movie is true to the written O'Brian series, which you may wish to read someday. Especially given your heritage. My only criticism is the movie is a bit too slick at points. Fortunately this doesn't detract from the totality. Worth a full price ticket for sure. D. ltdiver 3 #7 November 24, 2003 A must see! My brother-in-law, Jack, is a total wartime mariner fan and can pick apart anything that isn't true to form. He even found faults with "Hunt For Red October" within it's incredible depiction of a Soviet Sub. He loved this movie and is happy to believe that it will have a sequel to continue the saga. Oh, btw, his son followed his lead and is now in the Navy....something his dad never got the chance to do. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
aneblett 0 #8 November 24, 2003 yes it is based on a large series of books. Check out your local bookstore I am sure they will have them all collected and displayed now that the movie is out. I also saw it and was very impressed with it. Highly recommended. FWIW here is a link to a list of some othere o'brian books http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/default.asp?Ntt=Patrick+O%27Brian&N=35&Nty=1&D=Patrick+O%27Brian&Di=50&Ntk=SearchBooks&Section=books&Lang=en&mscssid=NU36K52608NU8HEFMKM99M8X6JK59JM6&WSID=011197DFD40FE5C149EEA3F1AB37734868DE4824 ageS.E.X. party #2 ..It is far worse to live with fear, than to die confronting it. ChasingBlueSky 0 #9 November 24, 2003 QuoteIsn't M&C based on the first book of a 20 book series? Great movie. Same pacing as Gladiator, almost. Interesting that they took two books from the series for the title of the movie. Found this tonight: The film is based on the narrative outline of the tenth book in Patrick O'Brian's legendary "Aubrey/Maturin" series of high seas novels about the British navy during the Napoleonic Wars._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... nightjumps 1 #12 November 24, 2003 On a scale of 1-10, I'd give it a 6. However, the book, "The Da Vinci Code," I 'd give a 12 on the same scale.

GARYC24 3 #14 November 24, 2003 I saw it last week, good movie, glad I went and saw it (maitinee price) There was 2 things I questioned regarding the time/era..The guys they pulled out of water onto the boat(they was in dingy) one of the guys said "F...ing", and Crowe said "God speed to someone..I didn't know if these were spoken of back then? Seeing this movie on a big screen is a must if your gonna see it.
turtlespeed 226 #15 November 24, 2003 I just want to know why the manufacturer of the flintlock that shot the doctor hasn't been sued for negligence yet. Actually, I would think that the guy that shot the doc would be in a lot more trouble than, a congradgulatory slap on the back and a smile that he was ok.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun

I believe the movie takes place only about 250 years ago. Certainly you didn't think the term "fuck" was only used more recently than that? Actually, I was a bit surprised that there wasn't more swearing in the movie. Anyway, here's what Snopes has to say on the subject: http://www.snopes.com/language/acronyms/fuck.htm And Phrase Finder dates "Godspeed" to at least the 15th century: http://phrases.shu.ac.uk/bulletin_board/8/messages/712.html So at least both of those terms would be accurate in context of the time of the movie.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

DJL 235 #20 November 26, 2003 Saw it last night and thought it was pretty blah. I've read a lot and about 18th Century Naval Warfare and liked what the they got right but didn't like the rest of it. Topsails during a hurricane? Good emphasis on the captain being a sailor. It was unfortunate that Crowe was (typ)-cast in this part. The sub-plots were contrived and poorly acted. Most of it was a half-hearted attempt with the only point being to tug at your heartstrings or invoke patriotism. There were some technical things that I thought were BS, but I don't want to give away the movie. My summation: "Gladiotor goes to sea.""I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
