The Linux/whatever box will do the HTTP proxy. He already has routing hardware that works and is more than adequate for the situation and much easier to configure than the Linux solutions that I've used in the past. Why not use it? Shawndiver 0 #55 November 26, 2003 FYI... Dell has decided to move their Customer Support back to the US... AUSTIN, Texas - After an onslaught of complaints, direct sales computer king Dell Inc. has stopped routing corporate customers to a technical support call center in Bangalore, India. Tech support for Optiplex desktop and Latitude notebook computers will be handled from call centers in Texas, Idaho and Tennessee, Dell spokesman Jon Weisblatt told The Associated Press Monday. "Customers weren't satisfied with the level of support they were receiving, so we're moving some calls around to make sure they don't feel that way anymore," Weisblatt said. The development was first reported Saturday by the Austin American-Statesman. Weisblatt would not discuss the nature of the dissatisfaction, but some U.S. customers have complained that Indian support operators are difficult to communicate with because of thick accents and scripted responses._________________

Dell has decided to move their Customer Support back to the US...Indian support operators are difficult to communicate with because of thick accents and scripted responses. This is very good news! Communication was a real problem for me when I bought a refurbished Dell with Windows Professional, couldn't run alot of my software. They were pretty cool about letting me switch the operating system to Windows ME, but talking to the fellow in India was a nightmare. Ended up telling him I can't understand a word you're saying and hung up. Trick was to keep calling until you got someone in Tennesee! Today, I own two Dell's, and when I have a problem I just go to the website and everything I need is there, they have my service tag numbers on file, so I don't need to worry about what hardware I have. I was able to completely reformat and partition my harddrive when my son downloaded something funky from the internet once. Dell is definitely the way to go. Glad they're bringing jobs back to the USA.
skybabe76 0 #57 November 26, 2003 One of the KEY things to look for when purchasing a new computer is the level of tech support offered by the manufacturer. Always get at least a 1 year agreement so you can iron out the "bugs" in the beginning. I have a Gateway and have a 3 year support contract on it. I had one major issue with it and they fixed it, no problem, no charge. Better luck on your next computer. "If you're going to be stupid, you better be tough!" quack 0 #58 November 26, 2003 HP is going to lose a lot of market share. Our work printers (brand new) won't work because of driver issues. HP's website has corrupt drivers and the support is non-existant. So now I have an expensive paperweight on my desk. But you have to understand, mental illness is like cholesterol. moodyskydiver 0 #59 November 26, 2003 QuoteAlways get at least a 1 year agreement so you can iron out the "bugs" in the beginning. When I bought the stupid thing last April it included a 1 year service warranty from HP and I bought an extra 3yrs of warranty from store I bought it from. But when all this happened HP said I was not under warranty with them and should contact the store I purchased it from if I didn't want to pay the customer support fees. So I called the store I bought it from and they said it wasn't their problem, that it was HP's problem and the store's warranty didn't cover it.So I got screwed on both ends. QuoteI have a Gateway and have a 3 year support contract on it. I had one major issue with it and they fixed it, no problem, no charge. Better luck on your next computer I'm getting my parents a desktop for Christmas and I'm strongly considering Gateway. My parents are less computer knowledgeable than I am and would only use it to surf the net, email and maybe do some printshop stuff or help keep records for our business..not much more than that. They've said the main reason they want one is to keep in touch with me via email when I move to a different, bigger college next year.So I'd like to give them that since I'll be taking my POS laptop (the HP in question) with me,leaving them with no computer here. murrays 0 #61 November 26, 2003 Amber, For what your parents wnat a computer for and based on their lack of computer knowledge...strongly consider a Mac. No viruses, no spyware, easy to use, reliable and good customer support. edited to add --->Because Apple makes the hardware, operating system and applications they would use for the most part (web browser, mail application) you can't get the run-around saying...it's the hardware manufacturer's fault, no, it's the OS, no, it's the application....one stop shopping for a problem. If my parents were alive and wanted a computer..that's what I would buy them.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
