kallend 2,174 #1 November 29, 2003 I signed up on the "do-not-call" list. Seems to me that gives a pretty clear message that I don't want people phoning me at dinner time (or any other time) to sell me all kinds of stuff. Why is the telemarketer's trade association fighting this in court? What possible value can it be for them to phone people that have indicated they don't want to be phoned? Do they think that irritating us is the way to sell more? Are they morons? People set up filters to prevent spam messages getting through. Do the spammers get the idea that we don't want to see their messages? No, they use phony accounts and hide the message subject lines to try to avoid the filters. Do they REALLY think we wanted to see their messages all along and that we set up the filters just as a challenge? Are they morons? Some web sites throw up really annoying pop-ups. Blockers are available to prevent these, but the web programmers devise ways to defeat the blockers. Why do they think we put the blockers there in the first place? Do they think we will really buy the products if they irritate us enough? Are they morons? Some web sites disable the "exit" or "back" buttons so viewers can't readily exit the site. Why do they think we don't really want to exit the site when we press "exit"? Do they think this will somehow endear them and their product to us? Are they morons?... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
Nightingale 0 #2 November 29, 2003 they're fighting it because its cheap advertising. implementing the do not call list is going to be very expensive, because the telemarketing companies don't have a way to integrate the government list with their current systems. also, phone calls cost them virtually nothing, (same as spam), so if they even get one person a day to buy what they're selling, they make a profit. ChasingBlueSky 0 #4 November 29, 2003 QuoteThe companies that use these tactics go on my "do not buy from" list. I vote morons. I have the same opinion. On top of that, I have a garbage can at my front door where all my junk mail goes the second I get home. I never read any of that stuff and fill a 10 gallon garbage can every week. Mail, Spam and phone calls are all called "Direct Marketing" and are done by companies looking to play the numbers and make the profit from that. Generally you will not see branding marketing campaigns from them, but you will know who they are from the sheer volumn of info they get in front of your face. You can cover more people and get your product evaluated in greater numbers than a door-to-door salesman ever could. Cold calling is all about numbers, or metrics and it is a proven successful formula. For example: If you make 100 dials, you will talk to about 50 people, 25 will listen to you, 10 will listen to the end of the sales pitch, 5 will commit to the purchase, 1 will actually make the purchase. Repeat the process the next day. If you hung up or said no without asking to be removed from their list, you will be recirculated to be called again at a future date, and they really don't care what opinion you have of them._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... AndyMan 7 #5 November 29, 2003 QuoteAre they morons? No. Collectively, "we" are the morons. They wouldn't do it if they didn't make sales. %40 of north american adults have bought products from spam messages. %62 of north americans buy regularly from telemarketing. Even those who claim they don't like it... buy from it. Marketers ignore your "do not call" requests, because they know collectively even those people on the list will still buy from them. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. lurch 0 #6 November 29, 2003 Speak for yourself, Andy. As for me, I have a very effective method for dealing with that kind of intolerable behavior, a method most people don't seem to be able to bring themselves to implement.... Violently aggressive rudeness, short and to the point. A local newspaper somehow got ahold of my cellphone number once. I have no hardline for two main reasons, one, I can't be reached when I'm not home and two, to avoid marketing harassment. The cellphone rings and its "Hi, this is Dan from the Telegraph, if you could spare some time to answer a few questions..." In other words, carefully constructed leading questions obviously designed to make me arrive at the conclusion that I need your product. When I was a child I found that kind of thing irritating as hell coming from adults. As an adult I find it intolerable. I said "Fuck off." and hung up. Two days later... (ring) I look at the phone and it says No ID available. Great. I pick it up and hit talk. Me: "Steve's hooker shack! We fetch em, you stretch em! What'll it be?" Dan: "I....uh.....um, uh.....hi, this is Dan from the Telegraph, if you could spare..." Me, loudly and violently: "FUCK OFF!!!" (click.) In 6 months since then I haven't had a single unwanted call from anyone selling anything. Now thats what I call 100% consumer satisfaction. Their weapons are rudeness disguised as politeness. I use that weapon with the candy wrapper torn off. Works for me. Flawlessly.Live and learn... or die, and teach by example.
dropoutdave 0 #7 November 29, 2003 I fucking hate the companies that do all this marketing/advertising. There is no need for their existance, they are just filling the world with shit. unfortunately there are just enough morons in the world to warrant their existance. ------------------------------------------------------ May Contain Nut traces......
