Michele 1 #1 November 29, 2003 Not sure what's happened, but I seem to be either forwarding spam with attachments or the actual sender of such spam without knowing it. I was clearing out my in-box, and deleting without opening and then went to close the email....and then got a notice from my POP3 server that there were 54 emails waiting to be sent, although some may have permanent errors. But - I haven't sent out 54 emails. How could this happen? And what exactly is happening? I have no address book because of virii and the like, but something seems to be going on. Anything I can do? I don't like sending things like that around...even if I don't know the people I'm sending it to. Just ain't cool.... Muenkel 0 #2 November 29, 2003 Michele, I would help you, but I am truly computer retarded. It's the thought that counts. Chris _________________________________________ Chris
Casch 0 #3 November 29, 2003 Have you installed Ad-Aware? The link will take you to the download page, it'll start automatically. You probably have some kind of spyware, could be a virus too, do you have norton aintivirus or McAffee? If you don't, you definately should. At any rate, run Ad-aware and it should find an assload of spyware if you've never run it before
n2skdvn 0 #4 November 29, 2003 do you have a firewall on your computer you might have have had your computer taken over by a spammer or virus sending out its emails. what version of windows do you have??if my calculations are correct SLINKY + ESCULATOR = EVERLASTING FUN my site
Michele 1 #5 November 29, 2003 Erm, thanks, Muenkel...the thought is there... Casch, I do have adaware, and just ran it again. I run it weekly, last time on Tuesday. It found two more, both marked "advertising", and so I deleted them. And you're right, the first time I ran it I got about 200 items quarantined. Yeuch. And my protection is solid. I think....I will go double check it and make sure... Kreg, I have Windows XP... But how does it forward to others who are not on a list anywhere, and make it look like it's from me?? That's scary. Has anyone even heard of this before? Ciels- michele ~Do Angels keep the dreams we seek While our hearts lie bleeding?~
indyz 1 #6 November 29, 2003 Also, change your email password. There is a chance that somebody is sending email using your email address. Changing your password might not stop it, but it's worth a shot. If bounced messages keep coming back despite your best efforts, alert your ISP. Nightingale 0 #7 November 29, 2003 if you're using outlook, you may have picked up a virus... they some of them send stuff to everyone in your address book. run ad aware, and an anti virus software.
Michele 1 #8 November 29, 2003 QuoteIf bounced messages keep coming back despite your best efforts, alert your ISP Wow, you know what? I've been getting a lot of bounced stuff in the last few days...things I'd never sent, of course, but still...I just figured I'm on someone's email that has a virus or something....hrm....maybe a call to customer service now is appropriate. Quotesend stuff to everyone in your address book. But that's just it, Kris. I have no address book - I have a little notebook I use and look up addresses but it's hard copy, not computer based...I got infected about 6 years ago, and started to do it that way. I thought if nothing was in my address book, even with a virus, if there's no addresses to grab, then it hits a dead end. Spooky. It's like my computer is alive or something... Nightingale 0 #9 November 29, 2003 it can also grab addresses off previously sent or received emails, so not having an address book doesn't always help.
Michele 1 #10 November 29, 2003 See, I didn't know that... But these are not from received or sent...no addresses that I recognize at all... Hrmmmmmmmmmmmm.......... Nightingale 0 #11 November 29, 2003 some viruses will snatch your email addy from someone else's computer, and make it look like the mail is from you, so then if it doesn't go through, it bounces back to you. sounds like maybe you and a friend caught the same virus... Michele 1 #12 November 29, 2003 Oh goody. I am running a thorough scan right now, and will post results... Ciels- Michele ~Do Angels keep the dreams we seek While our hearts lie bleeding?~
indyz 1 #13 November 29, 2003 Quotesounds like maybe you and a friend caught the same virus... It's not even necessary for Michele to have a virus. She only needs to be in the address book of somebody who does. If that's the case, there really isn't anything Michele can do about it.
Nightingale 0 #14 November 29, 2003 but there's a bunch of messages in HER outbox. that makes me think she's got the virus too.
indyz 1 #15 November 29, 2003 Quotebut there's a bunch of messages in HER outbox. that makes me think she's got the virus too. I'm reading it as the sent messages came from the mail server. In that case, they didn't have to originate from her computer.
Michele 1 #16 November 29, 2003 The scan is complete, and it shows ZERO virus/infected files... So it's not me. Sigh. Well, if it's not me, then there's nothing I can do, right? Thanks for the help, all.... Ciels- Michele ~Do Angels keep the dreams we seek While our hearts lie bleeding?~

indyz 1 #18 November 29, 2003 QuoteWell, if it's not me, then there's nothing I can do, right? Nope. It could be coming from anybody who has you in their address book, even if the two of you have never corresponded via email. The good news is that it is probably already over. If not, it will probably stop in the next few days.

My take is that spammers take your e-mail address, from wherever they get them from, and then use it to send their spam from, sort of a spoof, but using real e-mail addresses. I was literally being overrun with bounced messages for spam that I never sent. It was one of my unimportant e-mail addresses anyway, so I just closed the account. It did not stop in a few days, by the way, it went on for weeks and just kept getting worse. I'm walking a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. smiles 0 #20 November 30, 2003 Spooky. It's like my computer is alive or something... It's totally f*$#ked what these worms can do- the last one I had was got thru kazaa (light). Norton didn't recognize (think it was called W32 Gimili) not serious-low threat Went thru all my html files and picture files(I do not keep address book in outlook either but design websites) searching for urls and sending emails to every address- with message to check out this pic attachments containing worm. Went thru all music files changing extensions- I noticed everytime I went online I was opening at a yahoo page and couldn't understand why. I couldn't change options..anyway there was a counter in my registry counting down everytime I went online and after 10x it corrupted my mouse and keyboard... shit- finally got rid of it- but talk about choked!!!! no more Kazaa for me. My virus definitions are uploaded automatically and it wasn't recognized when I did complete virus scan. Hidden in registry files. Ad-aware didn't recognize........... SMiles good luck
ltdiver 3 #21 November 30, 2003 Michele, A post on our favorite rec.skydiving had a help for those who want Spyware removal software. -------------------------------------------- I'm in the IT business and I use AdAware, Spybot, and Pestpatrol.
