Just to go on the record. If I was sitting in Baghdad I would greatly appreciate this gesture. I have been "Rent A Crowd" for numerous idiots that wanted to "Visit the troops" on holidays and hated it. This was a bit differen't though. I thinks it's damn cool!

You think quade and ChasingBlueSky and mikkey would ever agree with that? Never! It did show balls and concern for our troops.

I think the Commander in Chief could show his concern and support a thousands other ways than a two hour photo op. This was just more cowboy bravado.

No, nothing says more than giving up his own thanksgiving for the troops, regardless of the time spent. I'm sure security had something to do with the amount of time he spent there.

I think it was a great stunt. His public relations people should get an extra fat Christmas bonus this year.

I am sure it was a great morale boost for the troops serving in Iraq and present at the dinner. It must be tough to be away from home during Thanksgiving.

I wish there was a way to ask the troops in Tikrit exactly how they felt about this event and if it made it any easier being away from home on Thanksgiving. I talked to two former military friends (both conservative) yesterday and they basically rolled their eyes up at this one.

Why aren't the whiners pissed about the cost of Hillary Clintons trip to Afghanistan? I would venture to say our troops are happier about GWB coming to see them than they are about Hillary's photo-op.

I personally think both are very expensive photo ops, Bush's has a bit more umpfh, that is for sure. The skeptical side in me wants to think Bush just did it as a re-election stunt, though that may not be entirely fair.

How much did her trip cost taxpayers?

How much did Bush's trip cost taxpayers?

Without those details, what's there to whine about?

k.. What have you done to support the troops?

Over the years? Plenty. I come from a family that strongly supports the military, and that had me volunteering a lot.

These days? Fighting with the local VA to help vets find a way to get vets their education benefits the government is trying not to give to them. Just one of the wonders of my job. It's amazing what is sold to these kids in HS, then 10 years later the same people are trying to screw them out of benefits. Don't even get me started on the GI Bill....I feel sorry for these men and women and how hard it is to get what they earned with sweat and blood....and I try to help them as much as possible.

And those are soldiers. Remember that part. When you may spend the day shooting, maybe knowing that your CINC is a cowboy is a good thing.

It reminds me of a friendly debate that I have over the 007 lead role. Who is more intimidating? Sean Connery or Pierce Brosnan?

If you are a soldier, would you rather have a president like Bush, who has your back? Or Clinton, who you don't want behind your back?

I think soldiers like the cowboy. Perhaps if Clinton hadn't been such a p****, he would have gotten a little more respect.

Oh yes Clinton who addressed Kosovar refugees and NATO military personnel in Macedonia, two weeks after the end of Nato airstrikes to drive Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic out of Kosovo.
The same Clinton who five monts later addressed Albanians and shared a Thanksgiveing dinner with U.S. troops in Kosovo.
Now wait a damm minute that p**** wasn't up for relection so just what was he up to.

blue skies

jerry

His 2 hour photo op took about 30 hours. President Bush gave up more than 2 hours to make this happen. If you weren't blinded by your liberal ideology you would reconize what a great gesture this was.

Bush said it himself yesterday - if anyone found out about this, he would have put all of those troops in grave danger. Therefore, it's not enough that these men/women are risking their lives for his war on a daily basis, they are put into deeper danger for his own political benifit. What a genuine, altruistic gesture.

This ranks right up there with landing on an aircraft carrier to declare "Mission Completed," which I believe GWB admitted later on was a mistake. This trip wasn't his idea (he said that yesterday), but one of his advisors. Hmmm.....I'm sure the discussion that led to this was along the lines of "We have this media/PR/political disaster in Iraq that is only generating negative press and effecting the polls...what can we do to spin this into postive press....come on people, we have an election to win!"

And yes, I'm certain that Hillary's poliitcal camp came to the same idea. Neither trip was necessary, or will help anyone but their own election team.

You say that you are sure of this? How about some proof. Been watching too much West Wing lately?

I think it was a great effort, but I wish Tony Blair had done the same thing at the same time for the Brits.

Last I checked the Brits do not celebrate Thanksgiving.

My opinion? I thought it was very very impressive that President Bush would deliberately risk his life to show the troops that they are supported, and to send the sort of message he sent to Iraq and to the rest of the world.

risk his life? If you ask me, GWB was in the safest place he could possibly have been in. It's the last place you'd expect him... and just look at the company he's with.

My first reaction was jokingly: "Ha, he must have gotten some sort of threat and figured he'd spend spanks-giving with the troops."

lol

How much did Bush's trip cost taxpayers?

Why does the amount matter? If they are going to whine, isn't the mere fact Hillary and GWB spent taxpayer dollars for a photo-op enough reason to whine? I demand the whiners whine equally. :)
Without those details, what's there to whine about?

We are in agreement here.
