This new brief from WBBH TV , NBC-2 Fort Myers Florida affiliate:

FORT MYERS, November 30, 2003 - People calling a toll-free number to report
injured and dead manatees or boating violations have gotten a bit of a
surprise.

Starting last month, callers trying to report an injured manatee using the
800 number were referred to another 800 number, which turned out to be a
sex-talk line called Intimate Encounters. A woman's voice promised a chat
with ""fantasy girls" in exchange for a credit card.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission number changed years ago, but the
old 800 number is still posted on boater education signs and brochures,
leading to confusion for callers.

Save the Manatee Club is replacing its old signs with new ones showing the
new number.

This is not the first time Intimate Encounters has turned a hot line into a
party line. It has taken over old toll-free numbers from the conservative
journal Policy Review, the World Wildlife Fund, Alltel's wireless customer
service and rape crisis lines in Maine and Arizona.

That is kind of scary. I worked as a Sexual Assult Response Team member on campus last semester and actually had a call one night. That was pretty intense for me as well as the caller. I'd imagine it would be pretty alarming to call a number that should be a rape crisis number only to hear phone sex garbage. That certainly isn't what you want to hear after going through something so horrible.
