LED christmas lights pt2

Recommended Posts

Wow. A big change in a year. LED christmas lights have gotten a bit cheaper ($15 for a 60-light string at Long's) but have gotten a lot better looking. There are now three or four styles, and you can get them in solid colors, or all white, or multicolored. And if half the households in California used just four strings of LED's instead of incandescents we could shut down one large power plant during winter. And they never burn out.

So far I've gotten 3 strings of white and 4 of multicolored. Looking for another 4 of pure blue to finish the house. Total power used will be 33 watts compared to 550. I'd save $12 a month in power bills (if I was still paying for power, that is.)

Until you mentioned '...still paying for power...' I was going to ask why you were concerned with conserving your own energy. I know it's a good principle to follow no matter what input source you use - but it's not like you are consuming anyone else's sun ;)

I still have the ol' 7 watt bulbs and my contribution is to use them less. As a power consumer, despite living in the land of cheap hydro ($0.058 /kwh + tax) a bunch o' bulbs burns a bunch of power. I think I'll look at the newfangled LED-thingies.

Well, that's all well and good, but since my wife makes neon for a living, LEDs have cut into the business. I'm all for saving energy on things like Christmas lights, but I think we should have way more neon signs.

Do you think she'd be angry if I bought a string of LED Christmas lights?
